Looking at DEN to FPO on United. Stops are in MIA,FLL, MCO and are all overnight stays in one of those cities.
I have a marriott deal to stay in orlando on the beach for 4 nights for $350, so would like to add this to the trip before hand since I have to stay anyway. Coming back home west can be done in one day.

Can I book this flight but force the 'layover' to be several days? Like fly to FLL tues or wed, then next leg of flight to FPO is sat?
Do you have to call United to do this if at all possible?

Obviously the main goal is the keep the cost down. I know I can just buy two sets of flights DEN-FLL and FLL to FPO.

I think you're going to have to talk to a real travel agent because I don't think United's web site will let you do that.

Trying to do similar, I have found a few situations where I could play around with open jaw itineraries and one way tickets in between.

I was trying to go to Puerto Rico with a few day layover in Miami during the World Baseball Classic back in March. Ultimately just wound up spending the whole time in PR.

Try the United multi-city option and it might yield what you want.

Obviously you know that Orlando is nowhere near Fort Lauderdale.

my Marriott deal can be used in an Orlando hotel as well, so either is an option for me.

I didn't think about multi city I should try that, but I guess I'll just call them.

Use United's advanced search, then select multi destinations rather than round trip or one way. Hope this helps

Or "on the beach".

Use multi city instead of round trip. Can stay in the "layover" destination as long as you want

Multi-stop is the correct answer. I'm at TA and would have to do it this way if it's more than a single night layover.

I'm not saying a travel agent with older school technology couldn't do it, I don't have access to a GDS, that some of the travel agents have been in business a long time use. But I'm not sure they could do it either.

I've screwed around with the multi city option in the past but iirc it was actually cheaper to book one way flights instead. This was a few years ago though.

Certain carriers and international flights (e.g., Reykjavik) allow 24-48 layovers without penalty. Domestic flights may be a different story.

I know that you can do this on AA (use the advanced/multi-city option), would imagine that United has some way to do it.

Not sure when Brightline is supposed to start operations but it may be an option to get around there. Wish they would step in here and take over the high-speed train nonsense; I would use something better than Amtrak that linked DFW to Houston, Austin, BCS and SA but it doesn't need to be a bullet train.

If you're staying in a layover spot for more than 24 hours, it becomes a Stopover, and has some specific rules. Luckily United is pretty friendly in this regard:

Really? We've done it multiple times and recall it always being a little cheaper. Now not significant, like $100, but still. I assume demand will obviously impact this one way or the other, but never seemed like there was a default fee added for a multi stop trip.

If we're vacationing somewhere that doesn't have direct flights, we make it a point to do this. Last time was a multiple day layover in Istanbul on our way to the Maldives.

So I'm trying multi city, and it's not working.

I picked a day I know united has fll to fpo (wed/sat/sun), and den to fll is anyday all day.
but it's saying nothing.

I just noticed, the FPO leg is operated by silver airways. I wonder if that has something to do with it?

Update.. so I can make it work if I chose the first leg (den-fll) the day before the FLL-FPO flight, or 2 days before, but no earlier than 2 days.

So this isn't really working like I would have hoped.

Also, the den-fll flight on the day or 2 days before is ~$235, the FLL-FPO flight alone is $150.

But doing multi city with those same dates, it's $1000.

Can you use open jaw for the United flights and just buy the FLL-FPO on Silver Airways direct from them on a separate reservations? I may not have followed your whole pattern of flights so apologize if I'm missing something. Just thought of its we we have used Silver Airways several times on Caribbean trips to USVI and BVI to get us back over to San Juan as they have a nice nonstop back to IAH for coming home and just always book with Silver ending up with an open jaw on United.
