Nothing factual really to add, other than anything they give you is a matter of customer service, you are not entitled to anything other than port fees.
So…. Like all things that are customer service related, you want to be the kind of customer that they want to help. I'd suggest you pick the person (you or your spouse) who is more friendly and likable to put in the call. Have a conversation, compliment the agent, do something to endear yourself to them (without sounding fake) and you'll get the most you can get that they are empowered to give.
My rules when trying to get something out of customer service:
1) Get a little personal with the agent.
2) Share something personal that should make them want to care.
3) Find out what is within their power. Typically, front line agents have a pretty limited bag of tricks they are authorized to use. Just straight up ask them what they have the ability to do for you, you'd be surprised how honest they will be (because no one asks that question)
4) If what you want or think is fair is above what they can give, politely ask to be elevated, but do it in a way that doesn't make them sound like you are disrespecting them. This is a pretty easy transition from #3 above if they've told you. Simply respond with "aw, I was hoping for a little more than that. Can you let me talk to someone who can do more? I'll tell them how helpful you were…." The goal is for them to make a positive transition for you, not to have them put you on hold while they warn their supervisor what a jerk you were.
5) Always offer to provide good feedback for the call, it's pretty universal that they will want positive feedback.
6) The the ultimate end game, if you get good at this, is to have them offering you more than you even asked for because they are using power they have because they want to, not because you demand it. That makes THEM feel good and THEY are the ones exercising power. If you get to this place, you are Jedi.
I learned these steps in a grad school communications class. The professor was a master, he used these steps to get a gate agent to stop a plane on a tarmac, put him on a cart and have the planes doors open for him to let him on the plane that had already left the gate. True story. But he didn't yell or make a single demand.
