I'm not an avid traveler. First time to Europe.

I'm gonna post my thoughts here. It might help someone.

1. You can get an Uber in Rome, but it's Uber black. I was told no Uber at all in Rome. Wrong.

2. Forget the taxi hailing apps, like itTaxi, in Rome. You will not get a taxi using them. I tried numerous times and never got a taxi. To get a taxi, go to the nearest taxi stand and wait.

3. I've been in Italy two weeks, Venice, Florence, Rome and Amalfi Coast. In Venice, it was blistering hot. Florence, very hot. Rome, very hot. It's just hot here even this time of year! The temp range in Venice was 60-75, but it's hot. One morning it was 54 in Florence and felt pleasant with shorts and a polo shirt. Then it got very hot during the day. I am sitting in the train station in Rome. It's 70. It's hot! Bring shorts. Bring shirts that wick sweat and are lightweight. No polos. No jeans. I brought a light jacket I never unpacked. I brought jeans. Mistake. I brought polo shirts. Mistake.

4. Do you like to wear ball caps? Bring one. Wear it. I was told people don't wear ball caps in Italy. LOL. I was misled.

5. Use Google reviews or something else to decide on restaurants. If it's not 4 or better, don't bother. I made the mistake one day after visiting the Accademia Gallery to just pick a spot in a very heavy tourist area without checking. Bad decision.

6. There is no complementary water here like the US. It's 4 euros for a bottle at the restaurant.

7. There is a 4 euro cover charge at each restaurant. It covers things that you need to eat like napkins, utensils, etc. LOL

8. I was warned about pick pockets. I never witnessed anyone around me doing that, even to females with open bags .

9. For females, don't bother with a scarf. They sell them cheap around town if you need one.

10. I wore shorts in the St Peter Basilica They simply have to cover your kneecaps.

11. If I had to do over again, for a two week trip, I would bring 2 pair of shorts and 3 shirts. I washed my stuff in the sink and hung dry. I over packed.

12. Getting on the trains are super easy. The only issue is that it lists the final destination. Just go by the number and time.

13. For two weeks, 2.4 ounces of shampoo/conditioner. Two tubes of travel toothpaste. One face wash for females.

14. Bring some wet toilet wipes. Each person carry two per day. I never encountered a toilet with no tissue, but just in case.

14a. Toilets, both private and public, might not have soap and the dryer is more likely to not work than work.

15. Raincoat just in case.

16. Get the best walking shoes you can buy. Important!! You will walk until you drop.

17. Two pair of shoes in case one gets wet.

18. You will probably be rolling your luggage over cobblestones so make sure it's good quality so.you don't lose a wheel.

19. The best wine is in Tuscany/Florence. Chianti Classico is good but depends on the vineyard.

I'll add more later.

You thought ball caps were not allowed in Italy? 70 is hot? Hope you're having a good time.

Use FreeNow for ridesharing in Rome.

I was in Italy for two weeks last year. Never had to pay a restaurant cover charge.

If you're getting a cover charge for dinner you're going to tourist restaurants. This is not the norm. Been numerous times and this is not common at all. Also water (tap water) is typically free, but you have to ask.

Italy is incredible and the juice is absolutely worth the squeeze. Italy is one of the easiest countries to travel in.

Uh no polos ? Huh ? My golf shirts or polos would work well in the 70-75 degree heat.

But I'm not pairing them with knee covering shorts lol !

I'm heading to Rome over Thanksgiving with wife and 18 y/o son. Will be my second trip there.
What's the mood in Italy right now in regards to the Israel/Hamas situation?
Do you feel like it has any impact on normal tourist activity in Italy?

Beware - it's important to note that his recommendation is for his trip length. You'll have to do an extrapolation to determine the proper shampoo amount (and number of bottles) to take with you based on your trip length.

edit - the OP didn't state the amount of shampoo he squeezed for each showering. That would be an important factor for your calculation as well.

Wait, you were assuming he took more than one shower? I thought he was trying to fit in with the Europeans…

Crazy isn't it? Restaurants are tourist restaurants because tourists go there.

I'm imagining every old American white guy in Europe right now.

Long denim shorts with white new balances. USA, VFW, or MAGA hat. Some sort of generic polo/T-shirt. Glasses. Earbuds tour guide thing around their neck.

Lol

It's normal now. I hit spots out of the tourist areas.

Allowed, yes, but uncommon.

70 here feels like 85 in my area of Texas.

Venice is surrounded by water, which sunlight and heat radiate from. It's also pure concrete and wall to wall buildings.

No mood that I'm aware of. I did not see or hear anything political.

It's a two week trip. That was info from my wife.

One final thought...

I'm an old guy, 60. I work out 2-3 times per week at the gym with heavy weights and also walk 15 minutes each session. Been doing that for about 4 years.

Four months ago I began walking 1.5 to 2 miles every day to prepare for this trip. I even walked in the triple digit heat of the summer.

I still was under prepared for the walking tours. You spend 7-8 hours straight per day walking or standing. You get a break for lunch and thats it. Even on the bathroom break you are walking to the bathroom and then standing in line. You are also walking over cobblestones a lot which makes it more difficult. It was brutal. I need a week of rest to recover. LOL

Also many of the bathrooms take credit cards if you don't have Euros.

Finally, for those who think a 75 daytime high is not hot over here... bring your jacket, your long pants and your long sleeve shirts. Bring your heavy cotton polos which act like a sweat sponge. You will regret it. LOL.

If you are leaving out of VCE, Marco Polo, arrive to the airport 2.5 hours before. It's extremely slow. We arrived two hours early and had about two minutes before they began boarding. We had about 10 people in front of us to check in and it was brutally slow, thus the delay.

Good luck and all the best to those traveling to Italy.

Just returned from Rome. If you are in the area from Borghese gallery, over to Vatican, down to Trastevere, over to colosseum, back up to Borghese # you are in a tourist area. Try all you want, every Roman knows you are a tourist.

It is nearly impossible to hit a "non-tourist" restaurant in that area, if not completely impossible. Some are just more touristy than others. If they have pics of food outside and waiters trying to get you to eat there, those will be the worst. We had one lunch like this because we were exhausted, in a time crunch, and just bit tHe bullet. It sucked other than the crust on my pizza was very good.

Some places have the table charge, some don't. We eventually stopped tipping at all because Italians flat ass do not tip, but we definitely left nothing when there was a cover.

You can use Uber to hail a taxi, but if you're in a crazy crowded area it isn't going to happen. We used it when leaving the Borghese Gallery and pissed off all of the old timers who thought we cut in line waiting for a cab. The meter starts as soon as they pick you, not when they arrive. Cabs are still cheap and convenient as hell. Stands can suck when there are a lot of people because very few are capable of standing in a straight line.

In Rome bring a hydroflask with you. There are 2500 public drinking fountains throughout the city. The naturally filtered via limestone water is cold, delicious, and free.
Staff - take out the trash.

If you were in the Rome train station then I guarantee you saw pick pockets. You just couldn't spot them.

Yeah it doesn't really work I guess unless nobody sees you doing it. I live over here and they are all over mainland Europe. Especially in the public transport.

Stupid post.

They go for the easiest targets, like open bags. I never witnessed any, that's all.

The travel misinformation idiots out there - and the Internet is filled with them - make it sound like every other Italian you meet is a pick pocket.

But you aren't going to witness it. Most work in teams of 3 or 4 and are probably better at hiding sight lines than they are at sleight of hand.

Golf cart tours are the way to go in larger towns, like Rome and Florence. We booked through viator.com, but most of our tours, including walking tours, ended up being with Liv Tours, so ended up reaching out to them on our last full day in Rome to do a custom golf cart tour. We were running out of time and still had a couple of spots we wanted to see and didn't want to walk. Try to only do one 2-3 hour walking tour a day if you can, to save your feet. Those streets are brutal.

Was in Rome and Florence in March, never paid a cover charge in restaurants, but researched reviews ahead of time to avoid covers.

Italy is great. Next time you go, get further off the beaten path. The big cities are awesome and worth seeing but once you get to the smaller places, it's a lot more fun because they're not so touristy. Also if you're going to do this, start really learning some Italian. Italians are not like Parisians (who get snippy unless your French is flawless metropolitan French) and will be happy to help.

French just like you to give it a go… they don't care if is bad. Most know English unless you get out in the country and they'll oblige it if you oblige them.
