So my 14 year old son and i are going to Big Sky in January to ski and several companies there offer day trips to YS which are quite expensive.
I'm wondering if the park is really worth seeing in January (we've never been, btw) or if we should just plan a separate trip there when we have more time.
Any thoughts would be appreciated

I think if I were to go to the trouble to go, I'd stay at Snow Lodge for a few days, curl up by a fire, drink good bourbon, and read some Hemingway.

We did this exact same thing last year the first week of January, skied Big Sky and took one day to go into Yellowstone. We loved it. Highly recommend.

Our kids were not old enough for the snowmobiles, so we took one of the busses. Saw lots of bison, a few eagles, coyote, swans. You can watch old faithful and walk around the pools with just a handful of people, instead of the massive summer crowds. One of my favorite trips ever. Only catch is weather. We had a calm cloudy day with high in the teens, so it was great.

I've done this trip. Went to Old Faithful on Jan 1. We went with a tour out of West Yellowstone that used vintage busses with snow tracks. They were really cool. It's was -20 F outside. I thought it was great due to very light crowds.

You can work around the crowds in the summer.

I'm an early riser. When I saw Old Faithful, there was only one other person watching. I didn't know he was there until it was done and I saw him walking away with his camera equipment.

In the summer months, anything after 10 am to 3 pm is horrible. Before that and the park is very manageable. After 3 to 5 pm, the place is a ghost town. Many of the visitors are leaving the park to go back to their hotels.

I would love to go to Yellowstone in the winter. I would absolutely do it if I were in your place.

Here's a shot of Old Faithful viewed only by me and one other person.

I would imagine that the wildlife viewing is better as an early riser as well. This is my goal on the next trip up.

Slough Creek Road in the northern part of the park. Get there well before sunrise.

In about a 30 minute stretch around sunrise, I saw:
  • bison (many)
  • bald eagle
  • grizzly
  • pack of wolves

Bumping this thread to also recommend the winter Yellowstone tour. One of the coolest trips we've ever done.

We've been in Big Sky all week, which is great by itself, but went to Yellowstone yesterday. We did the snow coach tour. But there's also snow mobile tours too. Those looked fun but way too long in the cold plus not enough snow right now on some roads. Rumor is the park was going to cancel snow mobiles until they get more snow. Also lots of people with no business driving them. Our bus came up on a crash. The people were ok but we took two onto our bus.

Our tour entered the West entrance and went to Old Faithful plus lots of stops along the way. We had a blast. Nice to ride around in the warm bus then hop out at all the stops. Awesome to see Old Faithful midday with only about 150 people between the coach and snow mobile tours. If you're in this area it's well worth the day trip. We used Yellowstone Vacation Tours.

I'll add pics when I get home. My phone died one day this week so all my pics are on the digital camera.

Maybe not! My aunt in Belgrade, MT was out mowing her yard yesterday, so winter has not hit yet
