Which would be better and any reason would be helpful. 2 adults / 2 teens. Don't need a party scene. Relax and vacation.

Tough choice. Both are beautiful places and two of my favorite spots in the US, along with Kauai.

I think Maui has more variety (volcano, Hana, more snorkel spots). But St John is hard to beat and you can hire a boat to hit the other islands, including the Baths on Virgin Gorda. Both aren't exactly a quick flight, and with Maui you are dealing with a time change. Maui will probably have nicer resort options, if you choose the hotel route.

The water temp in St John might be warmer in March.

If I had the choice, I couldn't decide.

Maui and St John are tied for my 2 favorite vacations I've been on. If it were just my wife and I going, I don't think I'd be able to pick a favorite. However, with teens, I would go with Maui due to a wider variety of activities available.

I guess I need to go to Kauai since my tastes seem very similar to BSD. We'll be going to Oahu next month just because the direct flight option out of Austin (short trip).

That's funny.

And 09Ag, have you looked into inter island airfare? Our last Hawaii trip we did 3 nights in Oahu and three nights in Kauai, and I think the transfer was less than $100 a person, and less than an hour flight.

I've never been to St. John, but Hawaii is very nice in March (Hawaii is very nice every month of the year)

Maui. The answer is always Maui.
So the greatest civilization is one where all citizens are equally armed and can only be persuaded, never forced. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

I have never been to St. John but didn't realize it was so difficult and time-consuming to get to. I am tired of the travel time from Houston to Hawaii and have been looking for a regular vacation spot in the Caribbean.

I would definitely do that if it were a longer trip, but we aren't staying long enough to make any moves.

A few years ago, United started offering direct flights from IAH to STT and back at least on Saturdays which has cut down on the travel time. We take a cab to the passenger ferry and rent a Jeep on St. John. Wish it were simpler, but it's not bad.

Maui isn't even the best Hawaii island.

If it's just about relaxing and having a good time. St. John. As others have mentioned it's just as much travel when you're talking about a ferry, but easy recovery. Wife and I spent days on the beach just soaking up the sun. We went in March and it was incredible.

Location is key because the taxis are insane prices. We stayed in St. Thomas (stay in St. John).

I would stay close to Cruz Bay (lots of downtown stuff and places to eat). We did Maho Bay and Trunk Bay. Trunk Bay was basically empty because they charge admission, but good beach bar and other things to see. Maho Bay we saw a ton of sea turtles and it had good shack places to eat.

That is the end of the peak whale watching season in maui. Real whales. Not the porker kind laying on the beach.
