I was looking around on United.com yesterday and found a reasonably priced itinerary leaving IAH -> DBV and coming back FCO -> IAH. I'm looking at a week total with time in Dubrovnik and Split before heading to Naples via Volotea. I know next to nothing about Volotea other than they fly to Naples from Split on Tuesdays and Thursdays for less than EUR 100 pp.

Any recs for must do in DBV / Split or experiences good or bad on Volotea?

Can only speak to Dubrovnik as we spent 5 or so days there as part of our honeymoon last year, but me and my wife both loved it - was one of our favorite places we've travelled to. The city itself is clean, feels very safe, and is beautiful. A lot of history and culture. Obviously if you go there you'd want to spend some time walking through Old Town (walking the walls themselves I guess is something you 'have' to do if you're there, but that part was just ok for us). We did a GOT walking tour which i'd say is a must if you're a fan, that was pretty cool. Our favorite restaurant we went to while we were there was Taj Mahal (great food, we ate there 2 or 3 times), and also had a nice dinner at Restaurant 360, although it's pricey (probably not the best value but we figured we'd go since we hadnt been to a Michelin starred restaurant). We also did a day trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina with a local who stopped at several different towns for us to see, and that was really cool too if you have a day to burn. It was too cold when we went to get in the water which would've made it even better because our hotel was right on the coast, but oh well. Theres also a war museum at the top of the hill that the cable cars go to which was good (dont recommend riding the cable cars to go up cause they were super expensive). Theres a restaurant called Panorama up there too that several people on here had recommended based on the views, but we had to cancel that due to bad weather that day. Overall would highly recommend Dubrovnik.

Driving up to split or ferry?

Easyjet flies out of DBV to many places.

We enjoyed the drive to Split, you should certainly make time for Hvar. We did 3 days dbv, 2 days split, 2 days Hvar and weren't rushed to much.

Hvar is awesome. I enjoyed Hvar more than Split. We were in Croatia this summer and ferried from Dubrovnik up to Zadar.

In order of preference, I'd go:
Hvar
Dubrovnik
Mljet
Split
Zadar (even though Zadar is close-ish to Plitvice National Park which is awesome)

Zadar is why underrated to me. And not just because of Plitvice.

What time of year are you going?

We flew on Volotea from Split to Venice. It was fine. Older plane.

Definitely stay somewhere in Diocletian's Palace in Split.

Agree with Pilot on the location order. Although I would add Korcula as a fantastic 1-2 night stopover on the ferry between Hvar and Dubrovnik.

Sometime in September. As of now Naples is off the table. Looking at flying into Split and renting a car to make our way to Dubrovnik. We'll fly OU from DBV to MUC and then UA or LH from MUC to IAH.

Why rent a car to drive to Dubrovnik instead of taking the ferry? It's about 2 hrs from Split to Hvar, 2 hrs from Hvar to Korcula and again about 2 hrs from Korcula to Dubrovnik. Riding the ferry is very easy and cheap. Also very smooth water riding between all the islands and beautiful scenery.

this... if going to Croatia you must hit 3 islands... Hvar, Korcula, Mljet.

Renting a car gives you serious flexibility and convenience, is cheap, and the driving in Croatia is very easy. Ferry is another option, I'm glad we chose the car.
