I'm taking my 9 yo daughters on a 5-day trip to San Diego in March.

We have legoland, zoo, and whale watching in the itinerary.

What else should we do? Restaurant recommendations?

Do they still do a Panda experience before the zoo opens? If so, sign up. It was awesome. No crowds and then they took me and my son around in golf cart to do some other cool stuff.

While they really don't get into the water, our girls really like doing a beach day at the Del. Looking for sand dollars, building castles, etc. Hotel rooms are run down, food is overpriced, but the beach is nice and they love getting a scoop of ice cream. You can pay for lounge chairs or cabanas.

I second La Jolla. Scripps aquarium is awesome and has an amazing view of the ocean from the outdoor kids touch area. Drive over to the shopping area and eat lunch at one of the casual restaurants with a good view like Cove House before walking down to Ellen Browning Park to see the sea lions. You can walk back up to Prospect to window shop up and down the street. If you're a golf guy, making a reservation at The Grill at Torrey Pines is a great experience and amazing view of the ocean and course.

The zoo is iconic, but our kids like the wild animal park better. I think they renamed it to Safari Park and is like Disney World's Animal Kingdom. It's just a bit of a drive.

If you do the zoo, make time to check out the train and carousel. Your kids are getting older, but I bet they still like it. The carousel is one of the oldest left if I remember correctly. Then walk over to Balboa Park and walk down El Prado to check all the cool stuff like the botanical gardens, fountains, lily ponds, and other museums, etc. It's not cheap, but lunch out on the terrace at Prado is pretty nice.

My wife's family all lives in San Diego so we go out at least once a year to visit. Let me know if you have any questions. My girls are currently 5 and 9.

Disney or Universal, its only 2 hours away! I love San Diego but theres not much to do with kids.

Annies Slot Canyon Trail was a blast though https://naturecollective.org/location/annies-canyon-trail/

Dont do the trail if anyone in your party is overweight though, the walkway gets super narrow in places but its really one of the best hikes I've done

Pizza Port has some really great beers and pizza for lunch/cheap dinner

Shopping in Encinitas, and then Maurizios for Italian food also great. VG Donuts in Cardiff great if you're staying in that area. Theres also a Modern Times Brewery in Encinitas

Zoo has two parks, both can take better part of a day.

Balboa is the original. The other, Safari Park, is about 30 minutes north. Safari Park has the only platypus outside of Australia.

Balboa park has tons of museum and gardens, worth spending time walking around there. Mind the homeless.

Coronado is nice to visit. I don't like crowds, but we occasionally go to the Del to walk around. The beach is public. Their prices are insane if you want to rent from them. Cheaper to buy some chairs and throw them away afterwards.

Annie's Canyon is pretty cool. My 11 year old boy loved it. Went through it multiple times.

La Jolla has the sea caves and docents who'll yell at you for looking at the seals.

Haven't been to Legoland, but Carlsbad is just 30 minutes away.

Fishing piers in the area, but several are getting closed due to this round of winter storms. OB is closed. IB was getting hit hard today. I think the sea wall in La Jolla got closed too.

I didn't realize San Diego was mountainous. Look at Julian to get into the mountains and eat some world famous pie. Also a wolf center out there and gold mines and panning. Depending on when spring break is, if we get snow in the mountains while you're here, we like the Meadows trailhead on the Sunset highway for sledding.

There are wine tasting rooms both in North County and out around Jamul.

We don't eat out though, too expensive.

Do Not go to Los Angeles unless you want to educate your kids about the homeless. Probably a little much for some 9 year olds.

And don't go to DL unless you're ready to educate your daughters about gaiety and insane adult children.

San Diego is great and plenty to do there

Also, LA to San Diego only takes 2 hours if you leave at 10pm. During the day, it's a 3-4 hour drive.

There is also a new outdoor music venue at the downtown marina. I was there last spring for a convention and stayed nearby, got a free Beach Boys concert from the balcony of my hotel. They had some pretty fun shows in the lineup.

Good spot to sit and have a drink/snack while kids play on the beach.

Also - to the OP, if you have Hyatt points I highly recommend staying at Park Hyatt Aviara - 5 star - pool/slides for kids.
