I am going to the Baseball Hall of Fame Induction ceremony in late July and was thinking about turning it into a family trip. What are some good ideas for a family of three with a 9 year old boy? Probably flying into Hartford, but could be convinced to do otherwise.

Howdy. I was born and grew up in Windsor, right there by Bradley airport. Lots of good memories. I think your son would really enjoy "Old Newgate prison" … https://portal.ct.gov/DECD/Content/Historic-Preservation/04_State_Museums/Old-Newgate-Prison-and-Copper-Mine

Also, recommend the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. Not too far of a drive.

There is a really cool, submarine museum, submarine base in New London/Groton Ct.
groton is really close to Mystic, you could stop by for some Pizza. (try the white clam Apizza).

While you're on the coast, going over to Newport Rhode Island, and check out the mansions. Then go a little farther to New Bedford, Massachusetts, to check out the Whaing museum and surrounding attractions

Last thing I can think of is to look out for any small town volunteer firemen parades. They are usually Saturday nights. Usually have a small carnival to go with them. Very patriotic. Lots of fun. They don't have any dates set yet. But as it gets closer, you should be able to Google it and see if one is going on close to y'all.

Almost forgot, Cooperstown is gorgeous and so much fun. Try to stay at the Otesaga Hotel if you can.

+1 on the US Navy Sub base museum at New London, CT.
Mystic Pizza wasn't that special in my opinion.

Downtown Burlington, VT is really cool. Especially the craft food scene.

Niagara Falls is worth the trip, especially the Canadian side.

The 9/11 museum/memorial in NYC is worth the trip.

If you are outdoorsy people and have a car, I'd recommend a trip to the White Mountains. It's about 4 hours from Hartford but if you're traveling northward, I'd recommend it. There's lot of easily accessible hikes that will be beautiful in the summer.

Just took the family to Boston in September. Great for history, architecture, coastal stuff. We also drove out to beautiful Western Mass to see the Shaker Village, up into Vermont and a day in Maine. Caught a Red Sox game at Fenway.

We are planning to go to Boston in May. We've got 12 and 9 year old boys. I'd love any tips or suggestions based on things y'all loved, disliked, etc.

Also, what part of town did y'all stay in? We're y'all happy with where y'all stayed?

I appreciate the help.

If at all possible, eat some soft shell lobster. Incredible flavor and only available in New England during the summer months.

For a brief period, my father was stationed at Bradley Field (today's Hartford airport) during WWII.

Also, you'll see Tobacco growing in fields near the Hartford Airport. My father once told me the best cigars in the world were Cuban's wrapped with tobacco grown in Connecticut.
