Late change in plans and I'm going to take off a few days at spring break. Obviously late to book most things, but kids/wife want to play in snow. We've done cloudcroft before but March can be hit or miss on snow. Looked at Red river/Taos but not much reasonable stuff available. We just need a national park or something where we can throw snow balls and ride a disc down a hill. Going to be driving so the closer the better with kids 3/8/11. Likely hit Carlsbad Caverns on way up or down.

Santa Fe / Albuquerque? Affordable hotels and short drive up to ski area around Santa Fe? How far are you willing to drive? Wolf Creek area.

Not sure where you are coming from but there is Winter Park in Ruidoso and if you are hitting the caverns that is MUCH closer than the northern NM spots you mentioned.

Ruidoso Winter Park

This is what I am thinking but have never been up that way. Besides the actual ski areas is there any state/national park areas that we can use? Driving from San Antonio area.

If your mind is set on Carlsbad, then try to find a place at Ruidoso.

If you go to northern NM, then forget Carlsbad. Too much driving.

I don't think you're going to have much luck finding a National Park to just wander into the snow. They basically just shut them down, and don't plow the roads.

ABQ has Sandia Peak, and not much else. Santa Fe has the ski area, and Valles Caldera, and the little ski area at Los Alamos aren't terribly far. There's a nice little old fashioned ski area NW of Las Vegas called Sipapu. Almost nothing there, but it's not a terrible drive to Taos from there.

I think I'd suck it up and find a place at Red River or Angel Fire. Lots of activities, usually lots of snow.

Sorry it's not much help, last minute like this is going to suck.

Ruidoso is the playground for Lubbock, so might be a lot of Tech kids there.

Plainview, Texas got 14" of snow last night, but it will be melted by Friday.

If you don't mind the drive then Angel Fire and Red River are probably your best bet for snow, rent a cabin and let your kids play in the yard.

For Angel Fire I would recommend something towards the bottom of the mountain behind Lowe's or around the country club as AF tends to not keep up with road plowing after Presidents' Day and you can easily get snowed in otherwise if you are higher up. I would also think that you can find some deals that late in the season.

If that is too far then I would second Ruidoso, at the least Winter Park will have snow and it's fun for kids.

there aren't a ton of options - I would just go with what's in your budget and available, in town.

We stayed a couple of years ago at Lifts West condominiums. Not fancy but more than adequate, great location, can walk to anything you need, including the lifts. Prices very good.

Lifts west is one of my recommendations

The best western isn't that bad either.

This. If you want real snow head to Colorado. Any ski town will still have VRBOs available, although picks may be slim. But ski town life is awesome even if you're not skiing. My personal suggestion is Winter Park but honestly you'll have a blast anywhere.
