Going to Florence, Rome, and then Med Cruise in early-mid July.

Wondering what everyone does for pants when it comes to the Vatican and other religious locations that require pants.

Also did you ever wear pants to dinner, or was is always shorts? We are going to some nice (smart casual) but not Michelin star places.

Wouldn't you feel more at home in a long dress at the Vatican? Sorry.

Bring a pair or 2 of non-wrinkle golf pants. They are very light weight, look nice, easy to pack and of course don't wrinkle. I usually bring one grey and one khaki on 1-2 week business trips and then I'm set.

I'm a big fan of the Kuhl Silencer pants and have worn them throughout Europe a couple times. Light weight and zippered back pocket, especially useful on the metro in Rome.

Costco seems to always have a great pair of travel pants under $30.

You can wear jeans but it gets hot

From the website

https://www.st-peters-basilica-tickets.com/st-peters-basilica-dress-code/#:~:text=You%20can%20wear%20jeans%20inside,distracting%20patterns%20or%20strategic%20ripping.

You can wear jeans inside St. Peter's Basilica. Make sure they're simple with no distracting patterns or strategic ripping.

Second Costco travel pants. I don't even bring shorts on overseas trips anymore.

Long pants for the Vatican. Shorts everywhere else.

Surely you're not so soft that you can't wear a pair of jeans on a hot day.

Traveling with jeans puts a lot of weight in your bag, whether you check it (weight limit) or carry on.

Versatile travel pants are lighter, many zippered pockets, water resistant, easy to dry, and you can slip a sports coat on and go out to dinner in the same pair of pants. I bring two pairs of different color.

I would not wear shorts to dinner in Italy.

This is the way.

These are at Dick's. I've bought several pairs at Academy, Dillards, and online at Fabletics and worn them in all types of weather. Depending on the style and store, they're marketed any number of ways (golf, hiking, fishing, etc.).

Pants of course for Vatican, all the other churches we went into allowed shorts if they were down to the knees or so. There was inconsistent enforcement between churches or the person working the door. They also seemed to be more strict on women even with similar length of shorts.
