I'll be in Italy for 10 nights and plan on spending 4 nights in Tuscany. I'm going solo and don't plan on renting a car. I want a base that I can do a few day trips from. I've been to Italy several times before and don't plan on visiting Siena, Cortona, or Montepulciano again. I went ahead and booked an apartment in Florence because it would have the easiest train connections to visit a few other towns. I have Arezzo on my list. Any other recommended towns that are quick, easy train (or bus) rides from Florence?

I'm also open to another base if anyone has a suggestion, as I've been to Florence previously. It would need to be easily reachable from Rome (I don't want to spend half a day making connections) and would need to have some good day trip options.

Lucca, Orvieto, Assisi, or San Gimignano.

Honestly, renting a car is super easy, cheap, and the driving experience is really fun. It gives you the opportunity to see a lot more on the way to/from as your destinations as well. We picked one up in Florence, stayed 4 nights near Montepulciano, and dropped the car off in Chuisi on our way to Orvieto, where we took the train back to Rome.

I have done Southern Tuscany with a car and loved it. However, since I'm going solo, I'm not really interested in renting a car this time. I would prefer to visit places this time that I can get to with public transport.

I'm also very open to renting a bike in Florence and visiting a nearby town or two for one of my days.
