We are doing some vacation planning for late May and think we have it narrowed down to Kauai vs Costa Rica. Would probably spend 7-8 days. Looking for input from people who have been to Costa Rica, and especially anyone who's been to both.

We've been to Kauai but are taking our recent high school grad sons and they've never been. None of us have been to Costa Rica.

I can come up with a great itinerary pretty easily for Kauai, based on what we've done previously and what we wanted to do but weren't able to. The main cons for Kauai are travel time and time zone change, and because my wife and I went a few years ago there isn't the "new adventure" factor.

Costa Rica is much more of an unknown. We generally know we would want to split time between mountains/jungle and beach, maybe 4 days each. Based on my preliminary research I'm thinking we would likely fly into Liberia and stay in the Nicoya peninsula somewhere, but I'm open to suggestions.

If I knew that we could have good snorkeling opportunities in CR and eat as well as in Hawaii (lots of good Poke and seafood) I'd be more sold on CR. We generally like to be active on vacation: hike, swim in the ocean, snorkel, see pretty scenery, and eat well.

I know it's the beginning of the rainier season in CR, but the weather forecast doesn't look that bad to me, or all that different from Kauai.

Any input is appreciated.

I have been to Hawaii and Costa Rica. Me and my family much prefer Costa Rica for several different reasons. Compared to Hawaii - Costa Rica is more rustic/unrefined. The main roads are good, the side roads can be a little rough. The locals "Ticos" are wonderful and very welcoming of tourists. There are plenty of good restaurants and you can also have chefs come cook your meal if you are staying at a condo/house. The outdoor activities are great: surfing without sharks is everywhere on the Pacific coast, snorkeling, 4 wheelers on beach or jungles, sailboats, fishing, crocodile tours, estuary tours, monkeys/birds/wildlife everywhere and even at hotels/condos, mud baths, waterfalls are amazing, tubing is legit and not like a lazy river at all, zip lines through the junglesolcano, scooters to tour the towns, etc. The beaches can be crowded or pretty sparse depending on where you go. The rainy season in Guanacaste isn't really rainy - a cloud/storm may roll in around 3:00 - 4:00 pm and cool things off for a bit and then it's gone. Jungle areas may be different, but we haven't experienced the huge rains in the jungles as we usually go from May-July. Not near as many people as Hawaii. It gets dark about 6:00 pm, but sun rises about 6:00 am. The Liberia airport is about one hour to the beaches near Tamarindo and about 30 minutes to an hour from the jungle/waterfall area. We like to go for about 12 days, this year we are sneaking in a 7 day trip in early July since we will be traveling to Italy in May. If you like to be active and don't have to be pampered all the time, Costa Rica is worth a try. Pura Vida!

As poster above said, do you want more "rustic", or similar to us standards when not at the resort.

I'd also switch it up and go big island vs costs rica so you have new factor of Hawaii. 7 days on Kauai is too long imo.

I prefer CR to Hawaii, have been to all the HA islands minus Maui. Agree with above posters that CR is more rustic, so it might not be your cup of tea, but I say try it once so you know.

Kauai is more upscale, manicured, fancy, 1st world, refined, polished, etc...great beaches, blue water and great snorkeling. But very crowded and very expensive.

Costa Rica is more rustic, close to nature, wild, 2nd world, local, etc but with very nice locals and very good local restaurants and beach bars. Beaches and water are good, but not as nice as Kauai and not as much snorkeling. And its cheaper than Kauai.

They are each great for what they are...just quite a bit different from each other.

I agree with others in that Costa Rica definitely has a more rustic feel and Kauai is more polished for an island. It's still amazing, as you know, but I feel like Costa Rica just has some different charms. My favorite thing about traveling and sending clients to Costa Rica is the proximity from Texas, such a short flight compared to Hawaii.

I would also agree and say to for sure do a split stay -- we loved the La Fortuna/Arenal Volcano area and then the Papagayo/northern Guanacaste area. But the Nicoya Peninsula was amazing as well!

The hiking, waterfalls, zip lines are in abundance everywhere and worth the experience. We really enjoyed the Hanging Bridges also.

Also, so many great hotel/resort options for all price points!

Feel free to reach out if you need any help planning this awesome vacation, I'd love to help!

Keep in mind that May is getting into the rainy season in CR.

Hawaii is the most beautiful place that I have visited for a tropical setting. With that said, the ten times that I have been to Costa Rica make it feel like home,

The La Fortuna area offers some things like wildlife tours, white water rafting, ziplines and waterfalls that can easily fill the itinerary for 3-4 days. Tamarindo is a popular beach destination, but is a bit touristy for me. If we stay in that part of the Country, then Playa Conchal is our choice. We prefer to drive south to the Quepos/Dominical area as the beaches are more secluded. Our favorite is Matapalo.

Eat at a Soda if you go. Talk to the ticos/ticas, but maybe avoid Jaco with teenage sons. The Cocal can be tempting.
