Help me out texags! The wifey is pregnant and due in late april/early may. Her suggestion was to take the kids somewhere and she'd stay home with the newborn during the summer.

I offered the kids to bring ideas to the table about where to go - they are of no help. Looking for suggestions where we can all have a good time. Girl (11) is more of a homebody, boy (14) is outdoorsy.

Thinking of a 5-6 day trip. I live in CS, can either drive or fly to a destination. What you got?

Camping at Big Bend

I had no trouble getting Internet access at the Chisos Basin campground when I was there back in December so that should keep the homebody placated and there's plenty of outdoorsy for your son.

You sure this isn't a trap??

I'd look into Yellowstone. Remains my favorite family vacation. My kids were 15, 13, 7, and 5 when we went and loved it.

Glacier is beautiful as well. Only spent a few days there, want to go back and see more.

East Tennessee. Do a few hikes and hit up the water park and amusement parks at Dollywood.

hah no trap (that was the first marriage). Last summer they did Yellowstone and more recently, they did the Dollywood area. Dont want to take them where their mom already has.

Is there a place you want to go that your wife doesn't? Seems like an opportunity there.

Have they done the Grand Canyon? My kids loved Arizona. Stayed in Flagstaff, and from there you can do the Grand Canyon (via the Railroad out of Williams), Bearizona wildlife park, hiking in Sedona, Meteor Crater park... tons to do.

Fly non-stop to Vegas. Drive to St. George, UT, then to North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Spend a couple of nightsbe sure to have a dinner at the lodge's dining room. Swing back to Bryce Canyon NP, then thru Zion on your way back to Vegas. If you decide to make it a Saturday to Sunday trip, swing over to Capitol Reef NP. Beautiful country.

Lake Tahoe. Homebody can stay at the house and watch her iPad on the deck of a cabin rental. You and boy can raft, hike, throw dice at the casino.

The past 3 summers, I've taken kids and done a week or so in:

Cloudcroft, NM. Hiking, small town, hang in mountains, White Sands.

Taos, NM. Ride ski lift, hike Wheeler Peak, Rio Grande raft trip

Leadville, CO. Hike Mount Elbert and Mount Massive, tins of hiking, running.
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough

Similar to above, we've enjoyed many summer trips to Red River, NM with our kids. Nice walkable town, family-oriented with plenty of outdoor activities there or nearby. You can drive there in a day. Typically we rent a condo, or a house if with other family. There's 4-wheeling, hiking, biking, horseback riding, trout fishing, scenic drives, Kit Carson museum nearby, camping, we often see bears, chairlift ride, all in a cooler and beautiful setting.
