We travel a couple times a year and our current luggage is showing the miles. I've never had a set of the hard shell luggage, but I'd like to buy a couple carry-ons and a couple suitcases. Anyone have experiences with ones to buy (or ones to not to buy)?

I've had good luck with all brands of hard shell. We now prefer it because when empty, it's typically lighter than nylon.

I like the exterior access thing for laptop/tablet.

We have Coolife and really like it. Macy's will occasionally have this on a really good sale. If you're not in the big hurry, shop around then wait for the prices to drop. Dillards too.

Use Samsonite, but there are plenty of good hard shell options at a reasonable price.

Costco has TravelPro on sale. Great value.

I have both the mom's carryon and the medium.

Monos not moms

I have a hard shell carry on and tend to miss the side pockets soft side provide

He's right on TravelPro, great bags. I use soft side carry on (easy to get into small external pockets) and a hardshell for checked bag.

My wife and I travel quite a bit and exclusively carry on.

She has the Away carry on and I have the Monos.

There is a flaw in the Monos design where the handle will not extend when the bag gets completely packed.

She always has more stuff than me and her handle glides up with ease where as I have to compress my bag to take the pressure off the handle components so it'll come up.

I love everything else about by Monos bag but will get an Away next time.

I'm a cheapskate when it comes to luggage, which is kinda funny when I'm dragging around some really mismatched gear.

But I just bought a set of Nautica hardshells from Sam's . Never done the hard shell before, so this was more of an experiment. I'm also assuming Sam's will honor some sort of warranty if I notice any problems this first year. We'll see

When I was shopping for luggage, the choice came down to Away or Monos. I chose Away b/c they have a brick and mortar store in Houston and I was able to go look at what they offer in person. I also like that I can just go in to the store in case of any warranty issues.

The airline broke a wheel off of our last checked bag, so I purchased this one. It has been on one flight so far, and still looks good. We'll see how it lasts.
