I am taking my son to Vegas for his 13th birthday party (no, we won't do anything crazy or illegal). He's a foodie, and I would love to know two great restaurants to take him to on the night of his birthday and then the next night before a magic show. We are staying at the Bellagio. Thanks!

Bavvettes at Park MGM was a very cool old school steakhouse.

There are some very good steakhouses in Vegas. but living in Texas, I always hesitate to utilize my stomach space on steaks when traveling knowing that I can get world class steaks at home. I'd do more unique spots. L'Atelier de Jol Robuchon is fun when sitting at the kitchen counter. Bouchon for French bistro food is a classic (I like Bardot Brasserie, too). But if you need steaks, Bazaar Meats is fun. Or find a high end tasting menu if the kid is really adventurous. Picasso's may be fun, and it has a unique setting with millions and millions of dollars of art all around you.

Capo's Speakeasy is a cool little Italian restaurant. My wife and I ate at the bar watching the chefs prepare all the pasta dishes. Really good lesson in cooking and time management. Plus, food is awesome and the setting (speakeasy environment) is fun.
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

heading there Sunday for a convention at Caesar's

I see Lotus of Siam mentioned a lot. Is it really all that, are is there an inside joke I'm missing here?

Actually, have happy hour reservations at Herbs & Rye based on some recommendations from others. Supposeldy great cocktails and half price steaks. We shall see.

I am in the minority here, and maybe all the hype just had my expectations to high, but Lotus of Siam was meh.

I will say every trip to Vega includes dinner at Piero's!!

Sounds like fun!

This is correct on Herb and Rye

As for Lotus of Siam you need to get something not basic honestly wait staff gave us some recs we went with basic and his selection...basic was not bad but nothing to write home about. Staff selection was twice as good

Oscar's Steakhouse downtown?

The canopy at Fremont might be entertaining for a 13 year old. Won't be able to get into Circa though, too young.

Here's the thing about Lotus… is it great Thai food? Absolutely. Is it an off strip, accessible place? Yes. Is it anything much different than some of the better Thai places in Houston or Austin? No. It's not.

Many many places in this country don't have the depth of culture to have great examples of certain cultures represented in their restaurant selection.

So many people are AMAZED by Lotus. It IS good, but it's not mind blowing to anyone who seeks out great Thai food. It's good. And it's not tremendously expensive. And it's relatively easy to get it in. So it's an attractive option in Vegas.

Yeah, the carnie freaks on Fremont are.....something. Hoars, dudes getting paid to get kicked in the balls....you got it all there.

I'll plug my choice again. If your kid is really a foodie then Guy Savoy is the place to go. He will see and eat stuff there you won't find at any of these other places. It's five star, over the top, French cuisine and an experience.

Now, we paid about $500 per head when we did it so that might be outside your budget. But it was a fun experience to do something like that once,

Similar here. All the hype had me ready for an other worldly experience. The food was good. The service was ok. The restaurant was not in great shape. Overall, it didn't live up to the hype for me.

Dude, i went to Fremont earlier this week pretty much to see Circa ... but MAN what a toilet. I couldnt get back to the Strip fast enough. Pure trash.

Stay on the Strip, no need to go downtown for anything.

We ate at Spago at Bellagio pretty much just for the patio overlooking the fountain show at night - the food was very good, tasty pasta dishes.

Also hit Beauty & Essex at Cosmo, more of a tapas place - loud as hell.

And, of course, Bouchon at Venetian. Bouchon still remains the best all around meal my wife & I look forward to. And honestly, most affordable too.

For those with Lotus fatigue, check out Lammai or head over to Sawaan (at the Patio Wine Garden).

Bouchon is actually my favorite. I typically stay at the Venetian because that's where the restaurant is. That onion soup…oh lawdy!!!!

I love that soup as well, but the Tom Kha Kai at Lotus is probably the best soup in Las Vegas.

A lot of great recommendations on this thread! A few favorites:

- Mr. Chow's (Caesars): Peking Duck
- Bavette's (Park MGM): Underrated. Has become our favorite steakhouse in Vegas
- Nobu (Caesars, Paris?): Miso Black Cod
- Julian Serrano (Aria): Iberico Belotta, Sangria (for you), Paella, etc.
- Javier's (Aria): Mexican cuisine that's a cut above
- Mateo's (Venetian): Currently our favorite Italian in Vegas
- China Poblano (Cosmopolitan): Fun and casual
- Andiamo's (upstairs at the D, downtown) - shockingly good
- Eataly (Park MGM): La Pizza e La Pasta - casual authentic Italian

Several recommendations (some mentioned above) that I hear are closing soon:
- Bazaar Meat
- Holstein's (for lunch)
- Nomad Library

My only arguments with those mentioned by others: Piero's - just TOO old school; Best Friend (evening DJ is too loud for humans wanting to enjoy a meal)
