Headed to San Fran in August for the Outside Lands show with the Killers, Young the Giant, etc. I used to stay with my Mom in San Jose when I went there but she died in December so now I am staying in the City.

Thinking about airbnb'ing an apartment in North Beach but like I said, I haven't stayed there in a long time. Plan is to get there Wednesday... explore Wednesday and Thursday, go to the festival Friday, explore Saturday, and come home Sunday. No spouses or GF's on this trip, just 4 middle aged dudes.

Any suggestions? I looked at the Mission also. Where do the cool kids hang out nowadays? And by cool kids I of course mean 50 year old slightly overweight people.

BTW, I am purposely NOT renting a car. I want to be out of my comfort zone and cars just get in the way in San Fran anyway

If you go the hotel route I researched all the Hyatt properties and landed on Hyatt Regency San Francisco. It looked to be the best combination of location and quality.

Good luck!

We just got back from a SF & Carmel trip. Stayed at the Argonaut Hotel in SF between Fisherman's Wharf and Ghirardelli Sq. There is a good website, Fog City Secrets, that has a lot of good info on where to stay and what areas to avoid.

We ended up getting a condo in North Beach. Supposedly was once owned by Coppola and he and Nicholson did the re-writes for Cukoo's nest in it. Whether that is true or not... who cares.

I like it because it has a 1500 sf rooftop deck, kick butt views, and it is close enough to Chinatown, local bars, etc.

And Bluecat... no one invited you and I doubt anyone ever does.

Buddy and me went to the metallica 40th anniversary shows and got the hotel package. It was in the Marriott Marquis.. seemed like a good area that was very walkable and right on the BART. We visited several trendy bars and breweries.
