Not a hotel but use Fat Tire Bike Tours for great English speaking tours of the city. Aggie class of 98 owned.

We stayed here (https://www.fortysevenhotel.com/) when we went to Rome and it was perfect. Within walking distance of everything we wanted to see except the Vatican. Balcony over the street and temple was amazing in the afternoons and evenings. Highly recommend.

Not a hotel, but my family of 5 saved a lot of money by staying at an Air BNB in Piazza Mazzini. It was a large 3 bed, 3 bath apartment which allowed us to spread out and each have our own space at the end of the day.

It was nice to be out of a touristy area and be in a Roman "Neighborhood". Obviously no room service or cleaning, but there were quite a few small restaurants, coffee shops, and grocery stores in the Piazza and a produce stand that would set up shop each morning. Different strokes for different folks, but we really enjoyed it.

It was about a 10-minute walk to the Vatican and a block or so away from a Metro stop, so it was easy to get around.

We did the Airbnb route in Rome, too. It's a lot less onerous than in the US (not all of the extra fees), and we were able to find a great deal in a very good location compared to the hotel options.

We were in Rome last year, stayed at Palazzo Scanderbeg and loved it. Would absolutely stay there again. Close to the Trevi Fountain. Restaurant named Klass just around the corner which was one of our favorites in Rome. Highly recommend the underground tour if going to the Colosseum.
Stayed at Hotel Otivm, near the WWII memorial, during that trip as well, would not recommend, homeless sleeping on the streets nearby.
Do not stay near the airport, there is nothing to do. Stay at least 10 minutes away from the airport.
