This is my first time in London in 31 years, and I have noticed that there is no bar or pub where you can "belly up" to the bar and have a few drinks. None of the bars (that I've been to) have that option. You sit at a table, get up, order at the bar, close your tab, go back to your table. Repeat when wanting another drink. I've searched for the past 2 days.

Seems to be the same in Ireland and Scotland.

That sounds like a terrible inconvenience. Closing out every drink. They must have been burned too many times or this an effort to slow down their drinking for their own safety.

Not our experience in Ireland. But we were in smaller towns a lot. Get the snug and you are right off the side of the bar.

Those are the only 2 things I can think of. The exception has been my hotel.

The cocktail bars, not pubs have bars you can belly up too. Plenty of those in Shoreditch/Hoxton/East London. But yeah, pubs dont have it really.

Tips aren't really a thing in the UK and in London at least contactless payment is expected. As such, closing out every round isn't a hassle at all.

Outside standing is popular. Loved it.

Those upside down liquor bottles with their little 25cl pre-measured pours are the worst thing about pubs over there.

The second is the little hand-held payment guns with their little paper receipt rolls.


But damn it's nice to find a properly poured Guinness damn near everywhere.

Best part about most of Europe, cheap pints and no tips.

On the flip side, the nice thing about London is there are quality neighborhood pubs in every area of the city. Practically doesn't exist here in the states.

25cl pours are little?

Maybe they meant ml? A shot should be 45 ml. A 25 cl pour would be a half pint.

They work the way they do because it is way quicker than how it works in the States. They grab your drink, have the quick payment device right there and you are done. No running back and forth to a computer to grab your card, run your tab, record you drink etc. No having to elbow around people just parked out in front of the bar.
