  • What is the best time of year?
  • I can book the trip myself like I did when I visited London and Paris, but if I go through an agency which is a good one that you can recommend?
  • How many days do you suggest? I am going to see the historical sites, not necessarily to "relax".
  • What cities should I visit?
  • Any thing to watch out for or keep in mind?
  • Approximate cost? I don't penny pinch but I don't want to be wasteful either. I will travel economy.

Traveling from the midwest, USA.
Not a Muslim, so no interest in visiting religious places.
Family of 4.

Half the US expats at the Qatar campus used this guy, my family included. It will be a top 3 trip of your lifetime:

We were there Oct 4-15, 2023 and the weather was perfect.

Egypt is awesome, but here are a few things to be aware of. Every site has a bazaar you have to pass through to get in and out. The vendors are very aggressive. Our guide told us to not even acknowledge them. No eye contact, no nothing. It was sage advice.

Cairo is a dirty city with over 20 million people. New Cairo is very nice. Old Cairo is dirty and crowded. But you will probably not spend too much time there.

There is an over 400% duty on imported liquor. So a shot of Jim Beam is like $30. But the Egypt made liquor is passable and quite cheap. You are in a muslim country so don't expect to see a lot of alcohol sales.

I have been wanting to go to Egypt for over 50 years. It was as great as I imagined it to be. You should have a wonderful time.

I have been there a number of times for work and I would say fall and spring are the best times. I would avoid July and August due to the heat. Upper Egypt is going to be like 10 degrees warmer than Cairo so June and September are going to be pretty hot there. Look up Muslim holidays and make sure you're not going during Ramadan.

You are going to want someone that is able to speak Arabic at all of the tourist sites and traffic is crazy there sometimes so it may be better to book everything thru an agency so everything is lined up. I clicked the link of the guy and he is thru Kanoo travel. I don't know the guy but the company I was with used Kanoo to book our travel.

On the number of days, I think it depends on if you will be doing a nile cruise and how many days. There are a number of options and I would look at viator to narrow down some options on number of nights. We never did one, but lots of people I worked with over there did them and said they were great.

While I was there we visited all around Cairo, went to the North Coast, Red Sea, and did Luxor. We never made it to Aswan. I think Egypt has some under rated or not very advertised beaches but you would probably only be there for the history sites. The Red Sea is know for world class diving, but I only snorkeled there.

As poster above noted, there is a lot of aggressive selling at the tourist sites. When I first went there it was 15 to 1 Egyptian pound to dollar and when I last went it was 30 to 1. I think now it is 45 to 1. A lot of inflation and people hurting there. A lot of the guides probably get kickbacks at places so a lot of them bringing you to their favorite spots even if you asked to go somewhere else.

I don't have much insight on costs as I was traveling for business most of the time. I know the airfare seemed like the most expensive part. Lodging and food were relatively cheap. I believe you can still bring in a bottle of alcohol and you are able to use your passport to get something at duty free if you need alcohol while you are there. I would avoid the Egyptian wine. Gave me a headache as I was drinking it.

I would say my musts in Cairo would be the pyramids, sphinx, Saqqara pyramids and the khan al kalili(market). There is the citadel, Coptic Cairo, and the museums as well.

In Luxor, we did the temple, Karnak, the queens temple on the other side of river - not going to try and spell it, and the valley of the kings. Everything there was pretty packed with people. A popular thing in Luxor is to do a hot air ballon ride but I was not brave enough. Working in Egypt everyone joked that you should never lean on a railing. I wasn't about to trust a hot air balloon. I thought Karnak was the most impressive site there.

If you choose to go to Aswan, you can also do Abu Simbel. A few folks that I knew that made it there said it was really neat.

That's probably just a starting point.

I was there in August - 1984. Definitely one of those things you'll never forget. We lived in Saudi Arabia so the heat was routine for us.

Pyramids, Sphinx, Museum of Antiquities or whatever it's called, and The Citadel are some of the top things to see in Cairo, plus the Nile River itself.

In Luxor, Karnak Temple and Valley of the Kings.

I recommend watching James Bond - The Spy Who Loved Me.

As a follow-up. We did a Nile cruise with Avalon and it was fantastic. Spent a couple of days in Cairo, flew down to Luxor and did the Nile cruise. Then flew back to Cairo for an additional day of touring before going home.

Our guide was from Cairo University, studied under by and worked with Prof. Hawass and was working on a number of dig sites in Valley of the Kings. Really nice guy and very smart. We typically avoid package tours, but in Egypt you really need someone who is familiar with both the country and sites and to steer you through the airports, etc. Avalon put us in Mina House in Cairo (Giza) which is a beautiful property right next door to the Giza pyramids. Our second time in Cairo we stayed at a nice Marriott near the airport.

In addition to the Avalon river cruise we also arrived a bit early and booked a side tour with Memphis Tours to see some things that were not covered in the tour package. Like a previous poster said, you will be encouraged to visit various shops and places to learn about local customs. Almost always is a trap to sell you trinkets at high prices. Just tell the tour guides no when asked.

Reach out to Memphis tours and have them customize a private trip for you. Egypt is so cheap there's no reason not to have a private tour for everything. We did 14 days there and it was the best trip I've been on and I've been to a lot of places.

Any interest in diving?

The Red Sea is absolutely beautiful and the Sinai has been IED-free for several years now.

Really though, Sharm is a great little dive town. Beth Sanders is a Brit working in the industry down there and does a great job setting up packages. I know she was with Camel Dive, but I think she's with Circle now? I'd have to verify.
Mohamed Hakim is a great dive master and fluent in English.

If you have other questions I can try to answer them.

I used this guy on two separate occasions for an all day Cairo tour in the past year. He will pick you up at your hotel, drive you to all the sights, skip all the entrance lines, and give you a great tour. All for an extremely reasonable fee. And he speaks great English and is very personable and accommodating.

I first used him through the concierge at the Four Seasons, and then used him a couple times on my own which was significantly cheaper.

Let me know if you are interested and I will send you his name and cell phone number so you can contact him on WhatsApp

We booked a private tour in February, 2023. Well worth it to have the hand holding in my opinion. Very pleased with the Cairo based agent we used.
