I visited Greenland last September on a cruise ship. We stopped in Nanortalki, Qaqortoq, and Nuuk. Greenland is amazing and off the beaten path . . . probably not for long with Nuuk's new airport. I was only in each stop for the day but managed to get a good feel of each town.
Nuuk is by far the most populated and very easy to walk around. Last year people loved to just chat and talk but with recent events not so sure how welcoming they will be but they were so friendly. Here are a few things I did in Nuuk:
- Nuuk Cathedral
- Sedna the Goddess of the Sea statue
- Hike to the top where the Hans Egede statue is located; it's super easy
- find the fresh catch market (don't know name but between main town and cathedral on a side street) ; don't go if raw meat makes you ill; it is literally an open area where they are preparing the local catch to purchase. I found it fascinating.
- Katuaq Culture Center for the local Greenlandic tapas plate
- near the culture center is a mall area with a grocery store. It was interesting to wander around; not every day you see seal meat for sale!
- random art statues around town.
There are several museums but did not go as I wanted to be outside!
Go on an iceberg boat tour . . . I did this it one of the other stops and was amazing!
Of the three stops I found Nuuk my least favorite. The other two stops were very rustic and seemed more what I expected of Greenland BUT Nuuk is amazing and hopefully you will like it!
If you want to watch a local there is a YouTube channel called Q's Greenland. She gives good information about her country.
