Looking for a town that may be under the radar so to speak to take my wife to for a long weekend. Basically we need a get away where we can relax and spend some quality time.

We love food, wineries, strolling shops, etc. Golf nearby is a plus as well.

Fredericksburg is the obvious answer, but looking for something different just to mix it up.

Due to kids baseball and gymnastics hoping on a plane is out of the question. We need to stay within driving distance.

We get away a couple of times a year to what we jokingly call the "B towns."

Brenham and Boerne.

Stay downtown in both places. Ant Street Inn in Brenham and The Kendall in Boerne. Park on Friday and never use the car again until we leave on Sunday.

Both places have good restaurants, wine bars, shopping, etc., in their historic downtowns. Boerne also has three breweries within a stone's throw of each other downtown. The pace is slow and neither town is as crowded as Fredericksburg.

There's no spa like a Hyatt Hill Country or Lost Pines, but it's also a lot more affordable.

Yes, Boerne has been on my radar.

Living 20 minutes from Brenham I'd rather not spend a weekend there on purpose . But I agree for a non local the area combined with Round Top provides a lot of options.

Right. Austin County. D'oh. I skipped right over that.

Well, I guess that eliminates the other B town -- Bellville! LOL.

How far is driving distance?

250 miles / 5 hours

Are you in an EV and need to consider charging stations? - LOL

I'll offer up 3 less common destinations:
  • Waco (although it's pretty inundated these days)
  • San Angelo
  • Lake Charles

Comfort/Kerrville aren't bad for weekend visits, either. We've been to both and enjoyed them.

Georgetown sounds like an option. Enough to do on the square and golf is in the area.

I love Wimberley. Wish I had a place there.

Never thought you could build a small, quaint, cool grocery store in a small town with its own character. Leave it to HEB to pull it off.

I could go spend a weekend at The Gage in Marathon.

There's a big ass hill approaching Iraan from the east. If you are going the other way sit on the accelerator.

a few years ago. A really neat museum for history buffs. Several good choices for BnB's. Not sure about golf.

It sticks in my mind because around 2018 I was driving through Iraan in early April and it was 110 degrees on my truck thermometer.

Might have been. My family moved out there 75 years ago and I was raised out there but I don't recall temperatures that high that early. Don't recall a lot of 110 days actually.

It was been probably 10+ years since I've been, but maybe Horseshoe Bay?

In the San Antonio hill country, the JW Marriott is always a top pick. Hyatt Lost Pines.

I love Hyatt Lost Pines, but man ... they've gotten outrageously expensive.

Nearly $600 a night for a weekend in June, not counting taxes, for just a basic room. So $1,200+ before food/drinks and you really only get one day to use all the amenities included in the resort fee.

We enjoy this trip alot. Call ahead and reserve your dough balls at Comfort Pizza, shop at Gibson's in Kerrville, try to convince my wife to ride out to Garvin Store and enjoy the drive versus going north for a winery run, and dinner at the Rails in Kerrville.

Call ahead and reserve your dough balls at Comfort Pizza,
We went to Comfort after Christmas a few years ago. Had a beautiful VRBO on Main.

We rolled into town right before dark and went to get a pizza, having no idea how Comfort Pizza worked. But we lucked out ... they had dough available and we got our pizzas right before they closed.

Never thought I would see Iraan as a recommendation.

But Iraan does have a good 9 hole golf course.

And Chandler Ranch is only about 50 miles south which in west Texas is basically next door. Nice place.

Yes it is. Haven't been out there in years but it has been renovated. I think the golf course, even it even still exists, is only a chip&putt.

I looked at the website for Chandler's. For "local" attractions they list the Roy Orbison museum in Wink. How far is that drive? 2 hours? 2.5 hours?

Wink is probably closer to Roswell than it is to Dryden.

I think it took out one building. So half of Wink is gone.

Hopefully the Roy Orbison Museum remains. Wonder how many people make it to that museum?
