Massive Flight Price Jump Question

Had been tracking a flight for late May and prices had been pretty consistent around 1300-1600. Went to book last night and the flight we were going to take is now 7,725. All the other flights are still around the same price but of course the expensive one is the best one for us. Looked at seats and there's still a ton.

Anyone experienced anything like this? I've never seen on jump that much. Should I go ahead and book one of the other ones or wait and see if that one comes back down?

Did you try another browser? Set VPN up in another location? That seems like an excessive jump

Did you text your wife something like - "hey I'm gonna book our flight this evening" or even mention it to her in person?

They're listening......

Last night our American flights went from $4k to over $10k. We booked with Uninted. This morning American was back to the original price.

I was hoping that would be the case with this one but still sitting at almost 8,000 currently.

I've seen this in the past. 4-5 years ago, I was looking at UA flights (IAH-AMS). For weeks economy was ~$1300 and then in jumped to ~2500 for no apparent reason. I waited a few days and it dropped again to the old price.

Also, sign up for the advance feature and you have access to totals by fare class (W, Y, P, Z, etc.). It is possible the discounted fare class is sold out so you are now looking at a different fare class.

American just loaded a massive schedule change that could be causing some ripple effects with availability and pricing (going out on a limb that you are looking at AA flights). Just give it time to settle out.

Yes it is AA. Going through their website its back within about 500 to where it was. Crazy but probably better go ahead and just book it.

I can't believe the prices of flights for next summer- anywhere, everywhere.

I've seen on united sometimes a random flight that is like $5k for economy, when other offerings around the same time are hundreds.

I always figured it was some weird glitch.

United also just has terrible pricing - particularly in PE and J. I fly to the UK not infrequently and would prefer to fly United over BA, but most of the time I book it's 25% to 100% more expensive.

Example: random week in March in PE is ~$1900 on BA and $3600 on United.

I'm based out of MSP so Delta is our preferred carrier. Wife and I were looking at going to Charleston in late March and Sunday night when I checked on the ITA Matrix the nonstop flight was less than $400, yesterday morning and still today it's almost $1200 for Delta Main. Never seen anything like it in my life.

It seems you have to catch it exactly right these days. We have been contemplating a trip in Jan or Feb before turnaround season and I log in today and see ~$940 to MNL from DEN. That is unheard of. Thinking 10 days in Boracay to escape the cold...

So are these massive price swings the result of internet tracking cookies combined with AI pricing and airline hub control? I understand the profit motive behind dynamic pricing but these fluctuations seem like a beating and a bad way to retain customers assuming there is actual competition.

I don't have any reference as it's our first time, but DEN-LIR for July is under $600 rt p/p
Nonstop flights in middle of day on United.

Seems reasonable to me.
I may do cash+points, so family of 4 would be ~$1500 = ~90k points.

That isnt bad at all, IMO.

Swinging back to this it got fairly close to where it was and we were able to book. Alls well that ends well but airline prices are still one of the most ridiculous things ever.

That and booking incredibly far out and not in the prime months.

We booked our trip to Portugal and Spain next early September last month. Flying BA/AA. DFW->Lisbon & Barcelona->DFW. Round trip was $713/pp.

I was checking on switching a connecting flight to earlier an flight on American for an upcoming trip in a couple of weeks. I expected the price to go up some, but it actually came down $1,300 per seat. Issued flight credits, but we will use them.

I probably was lucky, but will take that all day long since the original prices were high.
