DFW been an absolute mess (as is the whole AA system). 23% cancellation rate, planes stuck on the tarmac for hours and hours due no gate (i.e. lots of ramp and gate employees understandably couldn't make it in), FA's stranded all over the country for days with no accommodations and what appears to be IT meltdown today. . Evidently, operations keeps going with these rolling delays thinking crew are in places where they are not. Ugh!

Yah I think that the airlines were overly optimistic that things would get better today throughout the South. I live next to DFW and, although temps are above freezing, ice is not melting because of the the cloud cover and the roads are just as bad as they were yesterday. Good times...

Supposed to have a day trip DFW->IAH and back tomorrow. We'll see how it goes.

I ended up cancelling my trip. Less cancelations than Monday, but still, hovering around 35% of all AA flights cancelled nationwide.

AA just outright cancelling peoples itineraries with no notice at this point. Wow. Literally, they don't want people to show up. They have hit an operational breaking point.

They were put in a bad spot with two of their hubs (DFW and CLT) being completely taken down by the weather, with several others (PHL, DCA, and LGA) severely impacted as well.

What seems inexcusable was that they kept sending flights to DFW with no ability to handle them due to the weather. Multi-hour holds on the ramp after landing, and also numerous turn-backs after departure for flights headed to DFW. They are being criticized heavily for rolling delays as opposed to outright cancellations, which would have at least given folks more opportunity to replan and rebook. Also the crew scheduling system sounds like a nightmare. I couldn't believe hearing how antiquated Southwest's system was after their meltdown, but it sounds like AA has been running with exactly the same setup this whole time. Yikes!

6 small incremental delays later, I cancelled my trip and returned home. Wouldn't have enough time on the ground in Houston to justify the trip.

The gate agent said we were waiting on a FA but had no idea when we'd actually get one. AA kept delaying boarding 30 min at a time.

Quote:

I just wanted to share my journey over the last 8 days. As some of you are aware, my son is a senior this year and has received some interest from schools across the country to continue his education and play college football. Could not be happier for him. Now he's a solid player but nowhere near a Texas A&M radar…and that's just fine. So last week, him and I embarked on a journey to ultimately pick the school he's going to spend the next 4-5 years at. We had 3 schools on this trek and we knew one of them was going to be the pick.

Our journey started last Wednesday when we left DFW and headed to rapid city, SD to visit South Dakota School of Mines. We were going to visit on Thursday and Friday and then off to our next destination. The visit in South Dakota could not have been better. A++ in my book. Everything about the place was great and they ultimately offered us a deal we couldn't refuse. For those that are unfamiliar, everyone below FBS has to play with scholarship money in order to get players to come. FBS gets 105 scholarships, FCS gets 63, D2 gets 36 and D3/NAIA don't have any although everyone tries to give academic money to offset the cost. Once the visit was over we felt pretty good that Mines was the place for him. Friday came and we were off to Boston with a quick layover back in DFW to pick up his mom and brother.

We landed in Boston late Friday night and immediately drove to Manchester, NH to visit St. Anselm college which was one of the first schools to offer and the head coach is quite possibly one of the best men, not just coach, but man that I've had the pleasure of meeting in this whole process. Suffice to say, it was more of a courtesy visit as they had already disclosed their offer, which was very generous, however couldn't offset the cost of playing at a private college in the northeast. The visit happened Saturday and once it was finished we drove back to Boston to stay a night, explore Boston as we've never been there and then fly home Sunday….then came the snow.

Winter storm not only dropped a couple of inches of sleet and snow in Texas but it dropped two feet of snow in the Boston area starting around lunch on Sunday and all the way thru Monday morning. I've never seen anything like it. This is when the Vendetta begins. We flew American for this trip which would be one of the biggest mistakes of my life.

Our fight got cancelled Sunday night due to the storm. Nothing anyone can do about that…life happens. So we get rebooked to a flight Monday around lunch. We get to the airport just fine (FYI, the way Boston handles winter weather is one of the most impressive things I've ever witnessed) and so far so good. Then all hell breaks loose. 1211 flight bets delayed to 1300. No biggie. Board the plane and we wait to de ice. We shove from the gate about 20 feet to get hosed down and then nothing. We then find out the left engine won't start and that we have to get back to the gate so they can look at it. Unfortunately they made a boo-boo. Turns out they stopped the plane on a patch of ice and we couldn't move. They had to get 3 different tugs out there to move us 20 feet. Once we finally get back they tell us to deboard. 15 min later they tell us to get back on. We then have to de ice again. Finally after 4 total hours on the plane, we take off. Hallelujah we're going home…or so we thought. We got back over the Great Lakes and the pilot tells us that DFW has no room for us, and neither do any other local airports, so we are forced to return to Boston. The pilot told us on the intercom that in 30 years of flying he had never done anything like this. So we get back to the airport around 2200 which is right when the airport is shutting down for the night. Once we all figure out where the help desk is, 150 people run to get in line to find out all of the employees are about to leave. We also find out that American is not giving any vouchers because this issue was caused by "weather". 9 hours on the plane, 12 hours since we last ate, and the best they could do is give us a piece of paper with a QR code that takes you to their website and 1-800 number (which had a 12 hour wait to get a call back). All they could ultimately do was rebook us for a flight that left at 1000 the next day. Ok fine. So I book an airport hotel on my own dime and away we go for the night.

Now we are at Tuesday morning. Get to the airport and the 1000 flight is a go. Plane is there, pilots are there, and the passengers are there. Guess who doesn't show up??? The flight attendants. 1000 flight becomes 1100 which then becomes cancelled. Once again this cancellation was because of weather even though it was sunny in Boston and roads were clear. So a really nice gate agent was able to barely get us all on a later flight that flew thru LaGuardia. Crisis averted we've got a flight home, all we have to do is wait in the airport…or so we thought. Fast forward a few hours and we get a text that the LGA to DFW leg had been cancelled and by the time I talked to someone, all of the other flights that day were full or cancelled for you guessed it…weather. So once again no vouchers, got to get another airport hotel for 4 and have to figure out a new flight.

The one bright spot of the day was that my son decided to call the coaches at SD mines to commit to them which everyone from us to the coaches were super pumped. Definitely one of the coolest moments for this old dad. All he has to pay for over the next 4 years is room and board.

Now it's today, Wednesday. We have no clean clothes left. I've had to lay off work 3 days in a row. And I've spent about $500 extra dollars on hotels and rental cars. I was asked to write American about the ordeal and all I got in return was an apology. We got the 0600 flight this morning and we finally made it home about an hour ago. All I can say is family is always there to go thru hard times with you and celebrate the good ones with you. Also I was able to make a mortal enemy in a certain airline. This isn't over by the way. I fully intend on bugging them with this same story to see if anything can be done to compensate us but as you've probably seen on social media, we aren't the only ones this has happened to.

Anyways, keep your loved ones safe and never fly American Airlines if you can avoid them.

Thank you for sharing it.

Not surprised, unfortunately. Their whole system is a mess right now.

Every time we fly AA, we have problems.

They are notorious for A) cancelling early am flights in the middle of the night and not sending email notices; B) delaying flights by 20-30 min for HOURS only to end up cancelling; and C) having an app that totally craps the bed when there is any significant number of cancellations and not having enough staff at airports help passengers who can't rebook through the app.

They have this same problem in their PHL, CLR, and DFW hubs in the summer when there are thunderstorms. You'd think they'd have it figured out by now.

Sucks to be y'all.

I had my flight cancelled on 01/03 this year because of the festivities in Venezuela. All the air traffic in the Caribbean got shut down by a NOTAM.

I got stuck in St Martin for 6 days.

I'm sorry this happened, but what did you expect? The biggest winter weather event this season that covered half of the country including many airports that typically do not deal with ice and snow.

Complaining about this and summer weather storms as if it's a specific carriers fault is hilarious.

I might be jinxing myself but I fly AA exclusively about twice a month and rarely encounter anything beyond a <30 minute delay.

Are they faultless? Of course not.

But every carrier has problems and AA was put in a pretty bad spot with the weather.

I think our issue is related to the fact that when we do fly them, it's out of IAH. Not a hub, so flights get cancelled for crew issues.

But weather issues are common. No reason for the app to have a full meltdown and then not staff airports enough to rebook people.

It was a hard time...

But we persevered!!!!

We did have to pay for a place to stay and our rental car for those 6 days, though.

So, I need sympathy...

Flew from PHX-PHL on Wednesday and back yesterday, on AA. No problems either direction, though our flight yesterday was delayed about 15 minute because the inbound flight was coming from FLL and was a little late. Presumably because of the weather in the Carolina area.

Regardless, our trip was smooth.

When leaving on Wednesday and walking to our gate, we walked by another (not AA) where the flight had just announced a 10 hour delay, because either the flight crew and/or attendants weren't available in PHX.

This weather event was so large and impacted so many airports around the country it's no wonder there was chaos with so many necessary flight cancellations everywhere. I don't blame any one airline for the mess that happened over the past couple weeks at all.

There are plenty of other reasons to fault airlines, but this wasn't one of them, IMO.

I had 85 flights on AA last year with 37 of them originating out of DFW. 38 hours of delay but 16 hours of that was on two flights including an 11 hour delay LAX-DFW when the ATC went down. The other two 5+ hour delays were trying to get to MCI surprisingly enough.
