I think it would be a really cool place to dive. The accommodations may be a little "rustic." But if you are there to do 3-4 dives a day, who cares?

I got certified in Utila about 20 years ago while I was living in Honduras. It was a great place to dive. It's certainly more rustic than Roatan, but it's also a good bit cheaper. I dove with Cross Creek Dive Center, which I don't think exists anymore. Find a dive shop with a hotel to make it easier. You can fly or take a ferry from the mainland. Plane is much faster but also more expensive. You'll have a blast. Roatan is touristy, Utila is more magical.

And now I want to go back.

The south side features shallower fringing reefs, coral gardens, and easy sites ideal for training or relaxed dives (e.g., Aquarium, Jack Neil Point). The north side offers more dramatic wall dives dropping into deeper waters (near the Cayman Trough), swim-throughs, caves, and bigger marine encounters (e.g., The Maze, Black Hills/Pinnacle, CJ's Drop Off). Utila Dive Center is a great shop, I did my Rescue cert there.

Years ago we went to Utila and stayed at Utopia Dive Resort, but I think it has closed down. There was no road to the resort and it was only accessible by boat which was part of the adventure and fun! The diving was great and it's the only trip where we were able to swim with a huge pod of wild dolphins. That was an amazing experience. We went on a whale shark excursion but didn't find one that day. The people were super nice and we had a very enjoyable and memorable trip.

The only other unique thing we did was taking a catamaran from Roatan to Utila on the trip in. That was a fun experience, and on the trip home we just took a little puddle jumper back to Roatan.
