How long do you want to ignore this user?
Wife and I are going in June for wedding anniversary. We'll be there for four full days. Wanted to see if anyone has gone and had any specific recommendations on things to do, restaurants?
We were looking at checking out the beaches and going to Jost Van Dyke.

There are so many great beaches in St. John that you won't get to them all in 4 days. Make sure to rent your jeep early because reservations fill up. Also plan to be at the beach before 9 am or after lunch around 2 pm because parking is limited and fills up quickly in the morning and doesn't start clearing out until around 2.

Beaches / Beach Clubs - rough order of my favorites
all these beaches are absolute top notch beautiful, as in the best in the Caribbean if not the world, calm gin clear water and have good food, drink and restroom facilities. Each of these beaches have good snorkeling on the sides of the cove next to the rocks.

Maho Beach - swim with turtles and rays, great food and drink trucks, the best island experience ever

Caneel Bay Beach Club - get a reservation for beach chairs / cabana for the day, the only beach where you don't have to bring your own chairs and towels

Trunk Bay - iconic beach and a bit crowded since its so famous but still enough room to find a good spot, advertised snorkeling trail is overrated, but still a phenomenal beach with food and drink facilities with very good painkillers

Cinnamon Bay - another great beach

Restaurants
Windmill Bar - iconic view and must go at sunset, front row tables start clearing out right when the sun goes over the horizon but the view is still phenomenal for the next 30 min so grab a seat and a drink and enjoy

ZoZo's at Caneel Bay - the most expensive restaurant on the island but also the best. Get your reservation for 30 min before sunset to enjoy the view

The Beach Bar in Cruz Bay - it's a dive beach bar, but a great dive beach bar

Ocean 362 is also pretty good and need reservation

Driving to Coral Bay takes longer than it looks, and I wouldn't bother on your first trip to St. John. Also you can go to Jost Van Dyke to see something different, but it won't be better than what you have on St. John. And spend as little time as possible on St. Thomas. Other than the bar at the Red Hook ferry terminal is fun for a drink while you are waiting on the ferry.

Lastly, if you are taking a taxi from on St. Thomas from the airport to Red Hook ferry terminal, I strongly recommend you pay for a private taxi other wise you will be funneled into a van with a bunch of people and the van will make multiple stops at St. Thomas resorts on the way to the ferry terminal which is the last stop. So your taxi ride will take at least twice as long. I think its around $75-$100 for a one way private taxi for 2 people vs $15 pp for the van. After getting your bags when you walk out of the airport just start asking loudly for a private taxi and all the van drivers will point you in the right direction.

It's been 10 years since I've been down there. Is ZoZo's still open?

Also, do taxis still run back and forth to the beaches? We did that for Maho one afternoon.

And like I said, it's been a while since I've been but I chartered a boat to take us around the islands to chill, snorkel, and to visit the Baths. It was Captain Patrick with Privateer Charters. I don't think the company is under that name anymore but I'm pretty certain that he's still down there doing his thing. I highly recommend something like that for a day.

Yes, ZoZo's is open as I went there last year. And taxi's do run to the beaches, but I've always found it easier to rent a Jeep as taxi availability at the beaches is very hit or miss.

We rented a car in St Thomas and took the ferry over... St John's is great...

A snorkel tour via boat around the island is awesome

Jost van Dyke is a great stop

I don't think you can go wrong there

St. John is fantastic! We rented a jeep and hiked everywhere, and would love to go back. Unfortunately, we went before the major hurricane, and some of our favorite restaurants and places aren't even there anymore.

We've done Jost Van Dyke/Soggy Dollar from St John and Tortola every imaginable way and I think the best is a private boat charter. That way you can hit a few places (snorkeling or Sandy Cay or Sandy Spit) on the way. There is a ferry service from St John to JVD that provides a more affordable option, but it only runs a few days a week and it leaves pretty early. There are also non-private charters that hit a number of different spots. You'll have to clear customs in JVD. It's near Foxy's which is also good for a drink or two. Once there you can easily catch a cab to Soggy Dollar.

Lots of good recommendations above on SJ beaches and restaurants. Maho was a favorite but they added a lot of food and drink vendors post hurricane which kind killed the vibe. Also, Trunk Bay can get more crowded on cruise ship days. So many great beaches, but my favorite is Hawksnest all the way to the right by the rocks. If you are into hiking, Ram Head trail is pretty cool.

For restaurants, great recommendations already mentioned but I'd add Extra Virgin Bistro. Really good food and cocktails.

It's been 8 years since I've gone but it was one of our favorite trips. Just rent a Jeep and beach hop; we went to 2 beaches a day- do Trunk Bay early before people show up. We also did a boat trip to the Baths and stopped at Soggy Dollar, that was such a unique and fun experience.

We are going in June too (and were there last June). Loved it so much that we are taking our kids this time so that they can experience it. I would definitely rent a jeep. We used Island Time BVI for our day trip to the BVI's and they were great! They have a smaller boat if it's just the two of you going (this is what we did).

Our informal rules of St. John:
1. Get to the island as fast as possible after you land.
2. Rent a jeep.
3. Use a provisioning service and have your house stocked with food, alcohol, supplies and especially with Gallon drinks from Our Market Smoothies (Rum Punch and Painkillers). If you are taking kids, stock the Irie Pop frozen juice bars. Nobody wants to fart around looking for groceries on vacation and you are going to want to pack a cooler to the beaches.
4. Eat multiple times at Skinny Legs in Coral Bay.
5. Get out and explore. You cant beat being the first one on a St. John Beach in the morning.
6. Do not set up whatever shade structure you brought directly in front of someone who got to the beach before you.
7. Do not play your portable speaker loud for others to enjoy.
8. Get to a beach early, leave when it gets crowded, go clean up/take a nap, then hit some happy hours. Come back to the house to swim in a pool or sit in a hot tub and watch the stars.
9. Do a day trip to Jost Van Dyke.
10. Call and book your reservation for lobster night at Morgan Mangos in Cruz Bay. Also call and reserve a lobster off the smoker at Johnny Limes in Coral.
11. Dont get in a hurry, be polite, and soak it in. It can be the most relaxing trip you take if you let it.

and if the power goes out, get another drink and roll with it.

All really good stuff above as we vacation regularly in St.John….
One way to avoid some of the beach "crowds", is to rent a dinghy/zodiac and beach hop the day away. Most of the north end of the island is protected from any significant chop and it's a great way to find your own isolated spot.

I need to add St John back to the list. Haven't been in a long time after we went in late May and almost got carried away by massive mosquitoes.
