My brother and I are going to Oktoberfest this year for the first time. We'll be in Munich for 6 full days and plan to spend 3 of them at Oktoberfest and the other 3 seeing the region. Does anyone have any recommendations on places to go & things to see/do? Also, any particular tour companies to look at? I've used Viator in the past on other European trips and they were fine, but I'd love to hear about any positive experiences y'all have had with other tour companies.

We are thinking we'll visit the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site and also take a trip to Berchtesgaden/Eagle's Nest. The other day may be just exploring around Munich.

I've been to Neuschwanstein Castle, Zugspitze, Rothenburg, and Salzburg. My brother has never been to Germany or Austria, though, so if those are some of the best places to visit, I'm willing to visit them again so he gets to see them.

TIA!

Daytrips should have some good options. I recently just started to look at them over Viator for my clients. Happy to help if needed.

Dachua is a must. I'd recommend renting a nice car and driving insanely fast on the Autobahn wherever you decide to go. It's a blast.

I will be in Munich myself in May and have several day trips from there. If you want to reach out my contact info is in my bio. I can guide you on the strategy I used and help book some day trips for you.

  • Berchtesgaden (not sure how open it is at that time of year)
  • Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart
  • Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen
If you do any of the automotive museums - including BMW in Munich, you'll need to get online and book tickets in advance.

If you do Neuschwanstein do the hike up to/down from the castle. I feel like a lot of people leave this out and it is really fantastic and beautiful.

Literally just got home from a trip to Germany/Austria on Friday! We loved Innsbruck and we did a salt mine tour in Salzburg which was so fun. Highly recommend both!

I'm going in May and looking at what to do. It's a starting point for my trip, I'll spend most of the time in Austria.

Another vote for the castle and Innsbruck. There's this yodeling restaurant in Insbruck that was quite the treat.

Dachau. Unless you've already been to a concentration camp or extermination facility. Very relevant today.

Yes because our government is actively rounding up people for their religious views and sending them to work camps where they're starving them and working them until they die, and if not they're gassing them.

I mean listen to yourself my god. Take it to the politics board and gtfo the travel board. Obviously you have no idea what the concentration camps are like and haven't visited one since you're spewing such idiotic garbage.

I've been to Dachau. I went to Krakow but didn't visit Auschwitz (my wife did; she studied Soviet starvation pogroms in the 1930's - right up her alley). I do, however, have the Shoah DVD's on my mantle (go ahead, look it up). And I was an original Rudder Scholar in 1992 (go ahead, look it up).

No, we are not rounding up people and sending them to concentration camps. Neither was Germany in 1920. But if you go to these places and you don't think about what it would take for it to happen where you live, you are a fool.

Go look at those posters. Why does the department of labor create these Aryan messages that are drawn from a false idea that the 1950's were some idyllic era? Why is somebody in our government allowed to signal white supremacist groups?

No, it belongs on the travel board. Some people like to think about history when they travel - not just the things that reinforce their presuppositions, but also things that challenge them.

When I was at Dachau, there were busses full of middle school-age children being dropped off. I inquired why. Apparently every school was required to travel there. I thought about our own memorials, and what I would want our children to see. When I saw Band of Brothers later, I thought about the entire village being forced to bury corpses, and how it was their children and grandchildren who were visiting Dachau. And finally, I thought that this could be America someday, too. Those thoughts haven't gone away. I travel for food, nature, beauty, yes, all those things. But I also rather like being disturbed. It has served me well.

The history of it is certainly a welcome topic on this board, but you made an entirely political statement. I had planned to respond when I saw that yesterday, but opted only to give you that thumbs down.

You're pathetic dude. But I agree, dems are ready to round up all maga supporters and exterminate them. I see liberals make comments about this all the time.

As for Dachau, being a jew myself, it was one of the most surreal moments Ive ever had. I was fortunate enough to take my jewish mother there two years ago. So it actually felt much different to visit a place like that for me than you. Additionally, as a jew, i am infinitely more scared of the liberal progressive movement than anything maga. The fact that you are a Rudder scholar (congrats i guess) and cant see the antisemitism and political targeting from the left is astounding.

Dinkelsbuhl is a medieval era walled city, about 2 hrs away from Munich by car. It's kind of like the better known Rothenburg, but a little less touristy.
