I took a vacation to visit family in Kentucky and North Carolina and while I was there I found out that my uncle is related to "Popcorn" Sutton - an infamous moonshiner. We watched his video that explained how he made his stills and probably about 30 times during the video he said "This is the last time I'm makin this stuff." He had been busted in North Carolina a couple of times and then moved to Tennessee. The article is from Friday when he got busted again. Of course, the picture is of him with Willie.

Well, as I live in SE.TN and have gotten to know some of the locals, I am not surprised. I have been told that moonshine is not the hot ticket as growing the wacky weed is. Also, the county I work in (not live in) has one of the highest per capita meth lab counts in the state.

There are certain counties that you just don't go driving in the isolated areas if you aren't known.

Cocke County is E or NE of Knoxville and that area, though growing in population, is pretty remote, once you leave I-40.

The area about 40-50 east of me is the area where they found Eric Rudolph, the Atlanta bomber.

I live about 25 NE of Chattanooga and the county east supposedly still to this day has no blacks that live in it. There are several counties that border NC that may be the same way.

This isn't myth. My wife teaches and a couple of the teachers are from that county and have confirmed the stores....

Yep, the land of hillbillies. Pretty independant types.

Yeah, I was also surprised by the amount of meth abuse billboards.
