I know there are some Portland Ags that can answer a couple questions for me.

1. Where are the best places to live, in and around the Portland area?

2. My wife and I will be driving from north Texas to Portland. Is the best way to go through Denver and up that way or to go to California first to avoid any snow problems?

3. Anything else I should know would be great...so feel free to give me some advise.

thank you.

You might have some luck with the local A&M club as well.

1) Probably depends on how much of a city person you are. We are pretty happy in Tigard, which is one of the southern suburbs. Takes about 10-15 minutes to get into the country, about 15-20 minutes to get to downtown Portland.

Lake Oswego is probably the nicest suburb, but also the most expensive.

What part of town will you be working in, and what kind of commute do you want to face? That might help narrow down choices.

2) When (what month) will you be driving? Going to California and north is the safest to avoid snow, but by far the longest.

I wouldn't advise going up through Denver unless it is between late spring and early fall or you are comfortable with unexpected winter driving conditions. A safer bet with a similar route length would be to modify and go through New Mexico as follows: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=dallas,+tx&daddr=34.994004,-106.523437+to:Portland,+Oregon&hl=en&geocode=&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=5&via=1&sll=39.300299,-109.731445&sspn=24.218058,57.128906&ie=UTF8&z=5. This is the trip I took and I really enjoyed it.

3) a) Buy a good rain-proof light jacket. Most people here don't use umbrellas. b) First winter is the hardest. Get ready for short days and long stretches without sunshine. c) Summer more than makes up for Winter. I can't think of a much better playground than the Pacific NW.

I will be working at the airport. Is Happy Valley a good place to live?

Happy Valley is pretty nice from what I hear, although I have to admit I don't know a ton about it. I work down in the southern suburbs so don't really know too many people from that direction.

Troutdale is a pretty nice quiet burb on the far east side of town. It is a great place if you like fishing. You have really good access to both the Sandy and Columbia. It is just a quick shot up I-84 to the airport.

My wife and I have heard bad things about Gresham (crime) is this an area to avoid?

We will be driving there in February.

Have you heard anything about Clackamas?

Crime in Gresham is kinda bad for the area, particularly around the light rail tracks. I know some people that live in the outer reaches of Gresham and have no problems.

I like Clackamas. It is a little further away from downtown Portland, but a little closer to the Cascades if you like mountain activities.

Traffic in Portland typically isn't horrible, but rush hour is rush hour. You would probably encounter a decent amount of traffic from Clackamas heading up I-205 if you are trying to get to work between 7 and 9, but it is unlikely to be a gridlock unless there are accidents.

They suck, but Oregon still has the lowest gas prices on the west coast.

Newburg is a great town, but it is about as far away from the airport as you can get (It's a SW suburb, airport is on NE side).

If you can stomach the commute it would be a nice place, but if you are going to be doing an 8-5 at the airport it would to rough of a drive for my tastes.

I think we are focusing in on Hillsborro/Beaverton. The commute is a little longer but I have to be at the airport at 7:00am so hopefully I will miss most of the traffic. Plus, I think the rail system goes out that way.

Thanks for you help.

Live where you will be happy, but I have to warn you that the traffic coming from the western suburbs is terrible. The interstate system and loop doesn't go that far west, and your main artery through town has to go through a super busy tunnel that always has tons of problems.

It will take a while to ride the light rail from Beaverton. It is slow with many stops.

I have to agree with the last 2 posters. I've lived in Portland for 4 years now and have never been more frustrated with my commute than when I lived in Beaverton. I work downtown so my commute was about half of what yours will be and it was about 30 mins on the light rail and about the same, just more frustrating, if I drove.

But, that area is home to some very nice, safe neighborhoods so if you can deal with the commute then I'm sure you'll love it.

There are alot of good options on the east side that are worth taking a look at as well. (However, I would steer clear of Gresham) I live pretty close to downtown in Sellwood, which is SE Portland, and love it. There isn't any access to the light rail for another year or so, which is a downside, but it's an easy commute to just about anywhere in Portland.

Good luck with your move! You're going to love it here =)

Thanks for all the help.

My wife and I have found a place in Orenco Station just outside Hillsborro.

I know this is a bit of a commute but I think I will be avoiding most of the traffic due to having to be at work at 6:30am, for the first 3-4 months at least. After that I will be on a rotating schedule that will also avoid the high traffic times.
