Anybody have any info on community/lifestyle in or around the Lakewood area?

I'm considering moving there from Austin.

The obvious, skiing and mountain biking, I'm already thrilled about.

Lakewood is basicly Denver. Just a burb. It is just to the west of Downtown. I live on the Denver/Lakewood line and am about 10 mins to the heart of downtown even in traffic.

Being in Lakewood would give you better (quicker) access to those mtn activites that you mentioned. Depending on where you are in Lakewood, you would only be 5-15 mins from the foothills. I am not completely familar with all of Lakewood, but just like most areas there are places to try and avoid and places to be.

However, I don't think there is a horrible place to live in the whole metro area.

Sorry I couldn't answer your questions better. Denver does have a fairly active club and I think most of the info can be found at denveraggies.com

Thanks ColoAg,

The company I'm interviewing with has it's HQ in Lakewood. It appears to have it's own municipality that is surrounded by Denver.

Are there other subdivisions or areas that might be better to live in? I don't need upscale, just something middle of the road.

What about living further west and driving in for work?

I live in the Lakewood area. I don't really know many neighborhoods, Ken Caryl Valley is a nice upscale place. Just look around, traffic isn't bad at all here so a commute isn't a big deal. Golden (home of Coors) is another place you could look at if you like living right by the mountains.

Edit: Just remembered, Grant Ranch next to where I live is a nice middle of the road neighborhood. As long as you don't mind your kids possibly going to Columbine (if you have kids).

Thanks 64,

It's really good to hear that traffic isn't bad.

like others have mentioned, lakewood is essentially denver, and not a bad area to live in. we live in wheat ridge, which is just west of downtown area (about 3-4 miles...and just THIS side of the golden/arvada area). wheat ridge is an older (1950's/60's) community, and a great place to live. good schools, and much more house and yard for the $ compared to neighborhoods that are a tad closer to downtown. house prices here are also all over the map..from the very cheap (and not very nice) all the way up to bigger pricier ones, and everything in between. we love being on the west side of town for quick access to the mountains, and love being this close to downtown (both work in lodo).

oh and i've lived in austin before too....and i have said since moving here that denver reminds me a LOT of austin (size-wise and people-wise)...lots of cool things to do and TONS of parks and outdoor activities. oh and the weather's a little better here too...at least in summer.

If you want to look a little more west and will have to commute to Lakewood, I would look at Golden, Conifer, Bailey, Evergreen, Green Mtn, Morrison, etc...there are are a lot of places to choose from.

I've lived in Denver for about 10 years, and agree with most of the above.

If you're renting, then no worries, Lakewood will be fine so long as you're not renting a dump or are in a bad part of the city.

If you're buying, I'd probably consider Golden or another place a smidge nicer than Lakewood for good resale value. Like everyone has said, Lakewood is somewhat hit or miss.
