I've been living in Albuquerque since last April, and I've really enjoyed it.

The city has a great climate, which is incredibly advantageous if you enjoy outdoor activities. The Sandia Mountains offer great hiking trails and some skiing (but most people go to Taos or Santa Fe for that). People here definitely take advantage of the weather and scenery, as you will always see people running, walking, and cycling.

There's plenty to do in Albuquerque as well. The downtown area is still up and coming, but there are countless great restaurants, bars, breweries, etc throughout the city. I think the most popular areas tend to be close to the University of New Mexico and the Uptown/Midtown areas. Albuquerque is also rich in history. The North Valley and Old Town area are perfect examples of this (there are some great museums in the Old Town area). There are also several nice music venues throughout the city.

The two biggest concerns with the city are crime and education. While I do not have any children, I lived in New Mexico for a few years back when I was in high school, and the school systems are incredibly ineffective. And it doesn't appear as though much has improved. Consequently, several families have moved their children to private schools or have started homeschooling. Crime is relatively common, but I've found that it's concentrated within certain sections of the city. Thankfully, I have not had an encounter with this, but I'm fully aware that it frequently takes place. I imagine Abq is much like any city in these respects.

I hope that this has been somewhat helpful. While improvements are needed in terms of public education and crime rates in certain sections of the city, Albuquerque, overall, has been a great place to live. The city is bursting with culture, and its character and charm make this city very unique.

hmmm... i grew up there and turned out alright
even went to public school.

i love the town and would move back in a heartbeat if my career goals could be achieved there. i will move back once i have the opportunity.

there are wonderful opportunities to get outside and have a great time in the mountains. on the other side of town there are great places to hike along the river and the west mesa. there are some great places to eat a wide variety of foods. there's a lot of cultural variety. there's a good number of bars and microbrews (enough to satisfy me). it's a very dog-friendly town. the weather is great. housing is cheap. there's ample opportunity to enjoy the arts... particularly live music.

like i said... i went to public school throughout in abq... i loved it. i'm pretty sure that the teachers are underpaid and that not everyone gets the same value out of their time in school... but a lot of that is parenting too.

i give the city two thumbs and two big toes up.

ps. there's a great flea market.

yeah the public education treated me fine. a lot of friends growing up had teachers as parents. the outdoors are great and the weather is great. my parents live right at the base of the the mountains so open space is their backyard which is great they also own prop on the other side that is beautiful that are trying to sell

As blueag09 mentioned, my wife and I just moved here last December. Texas is still home in our minds, but Abq is starting to grow on us. The local geography is amazing, though I still like the greener areas to to north of the state a tad more. Now if I can just get over the politics here...
