The nicest place to stay in Carlsbad would probably be the Caverns, and I am not talking about a hotel.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn express there about a month and a half ago on my way to California. Nice enough hotel...upgraded to all the modern HI Express stuff, if you are familiar with that (towels, shower head, sheets, pillows). Not much nearby but a Sonic and McDonalds built into a gas station across the street.

Agree Hobbs is a dump. Worked there after graduation.

Stay in Carlsbad, nice drive up to Artesia and Ruidoso if you have time.
