Any suggestions on where to live? I'm married with a kid so somewhere safe but not too far from work (downtown). I wouldn't mind a 30 min. or so commute though. I like germantown but it's a little expensive.

IMO, it's Collierville or maybe a little further out into Fayette County (Piperton area), but the best schools (other than private) are Germantown/Collierville.

We just moved to the Memphis area also. We are currently renting a Condo in Germantown and absolutely love the area. However, we are younger and the style of these homes is definitely older and expensive. We have been looking for homes also for when our lease ends. Several people have also suggested the Arlington area. Apparently the schools there are pretty good and you get a little bit new and more for your money than Germantown and Collierville. I just keep hearing to stay away from Cordova because it has been going downhill ever since Memphis annexed the area a few years ago. There are definitely a lot of perks to living outside of the Memphis City limits (better schools and a LOT lower taxes.) Good luck with your house hunting.
