Moving there to work and want to live in N VA. Been married a few years, no money for a down payment, and want to have kids in a year or two. We are going to end up in an apt for at least two years.

Where to live in N VA for renting and what are the newest/cheapest places to buy? Should I just forget about owning a SFH and plan on buying a TH?

Thanks and Gig'em

The further out the cheaper.

Manasass is cheap. $350K TH maybe an old SFH.

Vienna area is the best place to be, made top best towns last few years. Can be inexpensive if you look for the right place. Be ready for sticker shock. Starter home (built in the 40's and 50's) will cost you $500-600K and those are generally considered teardowns but the neighborhoods are good.

Generally over the time I've been here (1980), the way it has been developing, the YUMP have moved from Arlington to Vienna. Some back to DC, DINK's.

Most of the amenities are near Vienna, Wolf Trap, Tysons Mall, Tysons Corner CBD, Dulles, Metro, 66, 495. Easy access to west (mountains) and east D.C. MD.

Do you need Metro access?

Do you want a yard for the kids?

Traffic from Manassas to DC on I-66 is terrible.

I live in Rosslyn and it's great, but I don't think it would be great with kids. You could live off I-395 in Shirlington where there are a few cheaper places, but they're not that nice.

Actually - I would take the time while you're renting to figure out where you want to buy (if you can afford it). Crappy one bedroom condos by the metro go for about $300k in Rosslyn.

Thanks vitruvian and Phil,

We don't need the metro or a yard and will just find an apt around tysons corner probably since I will work on that side of dc. Hopefully we can figure things out after a yr or two on if and where to buy.

Is the DC Ag club pretty active?

Pretty active, BBQ's in summer and football and Bball at local bars. Muster is a big deal downtown.

Lots of places in Tysons, see craigslist if you haven't yet, I'm in Dunn Loring on the Bike path, I'm sure you'll learn about it.

Lots of Ags around here.

Where in the DC area will your office be located? My answer will depend on this.

Commuting means everything around here, sometimes more than living costs.

I would say Fairfax County and/or Loudon County, but again, if you work in DC proper then Falls Church may be a better option i terms of costs.

I own a condo in Falls Church (inside the Beltway in a lakeside community) that I rent out, it should be available sometime in Oct/Nov. Would rather rent to an Ag if at all possible.

Where will you be working? Keep commute time at the top of your priority list in terms of places to stay.

Howdy,

I just moved to Reston, Va about 25 miles west of the district and about 7 minutes west of Tyson's corner. I absolutely LOVE living here. It is extremely young-family oriented. There are walking trails and the W&OD trail and everyone is extremely friendly. There are great restaurants and shopping and even a YMCA. I'm not sure about renting, but a 2 bedroom condo is going to run you about $275K right now.
