A friend of mine has been offered a job in VA. The entire state would be the sales territory, but right now the majority of the business lies around Charlottesville and Richmond. With renting happening the first year since the friend knows nothing about VA, what places would you suggest living?

Currently lives in a large TX city. Married couple with no kids, but dogs. Friend will be driving every day visiting different parts of the state. Right now there is no business in Fairfax County, but this friend would try to develop that after stabilizing the existing business (say after a year.)

Thoughts/help? Thanks!

I have been in Virginia now since 2001. I live in Southwest Virginia, near Roanoke. Charlottesville is a great place to live in Virginia. Excellent schools. UVa is there which brings some big entertainment draws. It has easy access to the Northern Va area as well as to Interstates 64 and 81 which gets you to most areas of the state. Only drawback is expensive cost of living but that is the same whether there or any other parts of Northern Virginia.

How young is your friend? I live in Richmond, and hate it. Its not a town for the younger crowd unless you live in Downtown (which I do not). The northern VA area (near DC) is a great place to live, Charlottesville is a cool place for someone in their 20's. It's considered the Austin of VA. The Newport News/Hampton/VA Beach area isnt bad either, just sucks if you ahve to travel to Northern VA or Shenandoah Valley.

Welcome to the east coast. It's like that in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida, too. Not all are that way, of course, but a lot of new (last 10 years) builds are.

I live in Richmond, and would not recommened this town.

I would live in VA Beach, but tunnel and I64 traffic would be brutal to deal with everyday driving to richmond and Cville.

Anything north of Richmond I wouldnt live as I-95 traffic north of Fredericksburg will make you slit your wrists. Obviously, there are alot more options up there, but traffic almost negates that.

I lived in Roanoke for a year, and while the scenery was nice, thats all it has going for it.
