I may have a good job opportunity that would require me to move to Midland...... what can you tell me about this place.....?

Corn, beets and unemployed auto workers.

On the upside, it's not Detroit or Flint, and the "Tri-Cities" area of Midland-Bay City-Saginaw has the lowest cost of living in the state.

That big old chemical company, Chick?

I interviewed there winter of my zip year.

The restaurant there didn't serve Ice Tea in February....

You may not quite realize it from the point of view of an Aggie and a Texan, but you won't end up wanting iced tea in February in Michigan anyway.

Nope, you drink tea all year and shouldn't have to ask for "iced" tea....

Well good luck and I hope it went well. I have a CJ-8 Scrambler buddy that moved from Raliegh NC to somewhere in the snowlands of MI and loves it. Of course he likes just getting out in the snow in his jeep!

You'll be within a 3 hour drive of any of the outdoor play areas that Michiganders (and quite a lot of Texans) utilize. There are many, many beautiful lakes and rivers lined with vacation homes and the adjacent small-town living that swells each summer between the 4th and Labor Day, but become beautiful vacation homes and small towns that empty out during off-peak seasons. Then there is Michigan's backwoods "secret", the U.P. Why isn't it Wisconsin? You have to cross a long bridge over the Straits to get there and it has an identity problem, which suits the scattered residents fine. Anyway, for the outdoor lover, it can be nirvana. It boasts of being the largest, least densely populated land area east of the Missisippi.

The UP was given to Michigan after the Toledo War, a border dispute between Michigan and Ohio.

Agreed, the upper Michigan area is beautiful. Petoskey and Harbor Springs (and further north) are all very scenic. I live in the SE Michigan area, and it's pretty here but it doesn't compare to further north. Winters aren't too bad, to be honest. You may need a winter or two to become adjusted to it; layers are important and scarves are actually functional over simply fashionable. I actually like the area, including Detroit. There are a some surprises in the area, if you're willing to venture out.

I lived in the UP for 10 years while growing up. While I don't think I would want to live there now, growing up it was great, and exploring around everywhere now when I get a chance to is great as well.

Lived there growing up and enjoyed it. I still go back every summer to enjoy the nice weather. Like what was said before, there's tons to do outside especially during the spring/summer/fall. It takes a special Aggie to enjoy the winters there though.
