Have a job offer in Arlington, but dont really feel like paying 1500 for a one bedroom apt. Does anyone have any ideas? Places like Alexandria, Falls Church are considerably cheaper yet people say the commute is a b*tch.

These places are only located 4-8 miles from where I would work. To me that doesnt seem so bad. Is the commute as bad as everyone makes it out to be?

TIA

Howdy OdessaAg,

We just moved near Fairfax recently and yes, the commute can be a pain around Arlington/FC/Alex. The best thing to do IMO would be to live off the blue line Metro in Alex and ride that into Arlington. We don't live in that area, but the metro is very easy to use and less of a headache I think. Maybe some other locals have better suggestions. Btw, if you are married and your wife has decent taste, you will pay $1500+ in that area. We pay 1450 for 750sf in a newer condo.

Any other guidance just email me (Joey) at joeyd05 at gmail.

When relocating from Texas, you have to remember that Texas real estate & rentals are very cheap. I moved from Texas and have since lived in Vancouver, Toronto, and now Seattle. For a decent house you will have to pay $250K+ and rentals will almost always be $1500+/month.

I have lived in the Clarendon/Courthouse area, now in Rosslyn, and moving in a week to Ballston. We looked a lot around Old Towne recently but the commute for me would have been way too much. My wife goes against traffic so it isn't a concern for her.

At 25 you should consider your social habits. If you enjoy hanging out with friends or going into DC to socialize, I am not sure I would go further out than Ballston on the orange line or further south than Pentagon City/Crystal City on the blue.

Most twenty-somethings are hitting Clarendon up hard lately. Expect to pay 1000+ for a studio, ~1500+ for 1bd, ~1000 for 2bd with roommate. Most singles share places. Consider this too...if you live within a mile of metro, price goes up b/c its considered walkable. If you can metro to work, do it. It really is that simple. Parking will likely be astronomical.

My wife and I just spent a couple of months looking for our new place so feel free to ask questions if you have them. As Plano said it'll seem expensive no matter how you shake it.

If all else fails check out the green line....probably has some cheap rent.

If the single lifestyle isn't a priority then look near the following Metro Stops:

Clarendon
East Falls Church
West Falls Church
Vienna

Things get a bit less pricey as you move down the list.

Clarendon put's you into a good singles scene.

I have a cousin your age that lives off East Falls Church and Works in Clarendon. Depending on where you are in Arlington these might not be difficult commutes.

Best of luck and welcome to DC!!!

There seems to be a fair number of us in the Northern Virginia area, we should do a NoVA happy hour or something. Something in Clarendon?

I'm at the Courthouse stop myself.
