Anyone live in central western KS area? Looking at a potential job-related relocation which would require me to be somewhere between Wichita and Dodge City. If there is anyone located in Dodge, Great Bend, Pratt, Hutchinson, Kingman, Medicine Lodge, etc. I would be interested in opinions.
I've also been told (by several Kansans) that Kansans depise Texans. Are they that unfriendly there?

Cow Doc- I am in the same field as you, though I'm still in school. I'm wondering if we've crossed paths before- maybe at PNC? I work in AMA for Extension.

I don't have any advice on the part of KS you're asking about, but I did live in Manhattan while my husband was in grad school at KSU. We found the people to be very nice once you got to know them. It seemed to take a while for them to open up. We are not Texans, so maybe that's why they were nice

A friend of mine is a grad student of Mike Brown's at WT and he's from Western/Central KS. I'd be happy to pass your email address to him if you'd like. Let me know.

Rocky Top-Don't know if we've met before or not but I do go to PNC every year. Thanks for offering to pass it on to your friend but I wouldn't worry about it. I know some people from that part of the world but I wanted to get opinions from people that moved there but were not originally from there.
Thanks for the response though.

I'm in Manhattan and I can say that for the most part everyone is pretty friendly. They definitely don't think Texas is anything special.

I've got a couple friends who grew up/spent some time in western and central Kansas. Having driven through it I can tell you there is absolutely nothing there. Its flat and there's no trees, I couldn't imagine living there. Wichita is an ok city but I haven't spent any real time in any of the cities farther west.

There is a couple of guys on the outdoor board that live in Kansas. I lived in middle of nowhere Kansas for a few months and it was not that fun.

I've been in Wichita for 14+ years now... it is fairly friendly overall, but nowhere is as friendly as Texas, generally speaking. There isn't any innate hatred for Texans that I've ever detected.

I wouldn't relish living anywhere in KS west of here...there just isn't anything good about those places IMO except that they're a little closer to CO. :/ If you wanted to get some land and peace and quiet, then it might be fun for you. Especially if you like to hunt. Wichita is really a very good place to live with a lot to offer, but it might be too far away for you, but I'd encourage you to consider it if possible.

My parents/bros/sis moved to Derby which is just outside of Wichita and in spite of the draconian enforcement of speeding and seat-belt laws and the insane homeowners association they have to deal with, they seem to have adjusted quite well. We Texans are accustomed to friendliness so Kansans appear to be jerks sometimes. Just remember - they don't hate you, they just don't give a rip about you. :-)
