I'll be covering the northern half of the state from Fresno all the way north.

Don't think I can afford anywhere downtown SF, so looking for suggestions. Upper rent limit around $1,800/mo. Can live anywhere since I'll be working from home and out of the car.

Suggestions?

Guess it all depends on how often you will be going to what locations and what you prefer (coast vs mountains). If you are just wanting to be centrally located maybe look at Rocklin or Roseville, suburbs of Sacramento. I lived out near there for a while and it worked well for my needs. Kids/Family would also change things depending on schools, but I am assuming that they are not in the picture.

+1

If you are going to be driving down to Fresno and up to Redding frequently, then the Sacramento area would be the mid-point between the two. Would also be close to Reno/Tahoe. However, driving into the Bay Area during AM rush hour would be tricky as the traffic flow is generally east to west.

On the other hand, if most of your business will be in the Bay Area with a few trips sprinkled in to the rest of NorCal, you might consider one of the East Bay suburbs (Livermore, Dublin, Pleasanton, San Ramon, Danville, Walnut Creek). I live in Pleasanton, and it's not a bad place to be. It's at the end of the BART light rail line, and takes about 45 minutes to get to downtown SF on the BART. It's still expensive...my 650 sq ft apt runs $1,400 a month, but it is a nice complex in a nice neighborhood (very little crime, etc.). There are bars and restaurants in town, but the nightlife isn't comparable to downtown SF. Basically, it's your typical upper class suburb.

Fortunately, both the Bay Area and the Sacramento area both have A&M Clubs. I can't speak for how active the Sacramento A&M Club is, but I do know the Bay Area A&M Club has monthly happy hours, and game watching parties in the fall.

Sac is prolly your most logical choice. Ive had extended stays in Auburn due to work and really like that area as well.
