My girlfriend and I have been in Singapore the past 2.5 years. She was just offered a director role in San Fran which leaves me with finding a job. I'm in the oil industry which doesnt seem like it will leave me with much.

My forte is control systems/industrial automation/instrumentation but I'm looking for alternatives. Any suggestions?

Are there many aggies in San Fran?

Uhh Chevron is based right outside of San Francisco in the East Bay suburb of San Ramon. They used to be based on Market Street in downtown San Francisco but real estate got too expensive in the city.

Furthermore Shell and Tesoro run refineries in Martinez, Valero runs one in Benicia, COP runs a refinery in Rodeo, and CVX runs one in Richmond.

You won't learn about it from the "progressives" who have moved to the Bay Area in the last 20 years, but there is a rich O&G history in the "Yay Area". Hell half my friends growing up had a parent working at one of the refineries and the other half were complaining about having to move to Jakarta, Brunei, or Lagos because "dad had been transferred."

That sounds a little more promising than I imagined.

My current company has a satellite office in Martinez, but they do slightly different work than what I've done. All my experience is with downstream (refineries, and petrochemicals)

Not many of us out here, but we're just in hiding.

In all seriousness, this is an awesome city.

Well, there's now one more Aggie in SF. Just accepted a job offer yesterday!

Wife is flying out tomorrow and we're going to be looking all over for a place to live. Looking forward to meeting some other Bay Area Aggies!

Pros/Cons to living in the city? Any suburbs that are solid for people in their 20's/30's with no kids?

We've settled in San Ramon, but only been here a few days so can't really give many details on age.

I think the majority of younger folks tend to live as close to SF as possible. Wife and I considered it, but just couldn't stomach the cost.

So far the East Bay seems pretty nice, but a bit suburban.
