Give it a visit and you’ll probably know if it’s for you pretty quickly. I lived there for a few months in ’06 and loved it. It was intended to be a temporary move (long story) but after a month or two, I was trying to make it permanent. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it work and had to leave for a job elsewhere.
It’s probably not for everybody, but for some people, it’s just right. Yes, technically, it’s desert, but it’s Colorado desert - it’s very different from the southern AZ desert I live in now. I was there from July to November and I don’t think it got hot for more than a few days in July – at least it didn’t feel hot. The weather was always interesting, though, and could change in a heartbeat.
If you’re into outdoor recreation, just about everything that doesn’t require an ocean is available within a couple hours of GJ.
No place is perfect but GJ is about as good as anywhere else, in my experience. Downtown is nice and there is a good medical center in GJ, if that is a concern. And as others have mentioned, the cost of living is moderate.
The photo below was taken looking east onto the Grand Valley. The lunar-like cliffs in the background are the Book Cliffs - they curve around to the west and extend well into Utah. On the other side of them, it is mostly woodlands all the way to the Rockies.
