So I've received a very enticing offer to a job in Portland, OR. Any Ags on here who live up there? Things I should be aware of? Places to avoid? Other advice?

Used to live there (years ago), and still have friends up there. Loved it, and would go back if the opportunity presented itself. Lots to do outdoors, the ocean and mountains aren't far off, and Portland is a neat but small city.

Depending on your politics, you might find the average Portlandier to be slightly or extremely to the left, if that's important to you...

Go to THE BEER THREAD on the Wine/Food/Spirits board. There are several guys there that live in the Portland area.

I, myself, live in Dallas but have been to Portland three times for guys trips (beer, rafting, hiking, football). We had an awesome time every time we went. Think of it as the Pacific Northwest version of Austin. If you like good beer then you may never leave. There are over 30 breweries in town. This is why I can never live there

Actually...I'll post over there and see if a few of them wouldn't mind giving you some advice.

I'm in Portland. We love it up here. It's pretty amazing to be an hour and a half away from the mountains in one direction and an hour and a half away from the ocean in the other. There is an A&M club up here that does watch parties for the games.

Each neighborhood has a different persona. It's a really unique city. You won't find many chains other than fast food places. They are big on local restaurants/businesses and fresh local produce. The farmers markets around here are great, but I believe they shut down right before Christmas and open back up around March.

If you are looking for a place to live, I wouldn't go past 82nd to the east. What area will the job be in?

Do you have any specific questions about the area or are you just looking for general perceptions?

If you're a die hard conservative traditional Texan there is a good chance you'll hate it. If you like the outdoors and great beer you'll love it. I have one friend that relocated about 6 years ago after undergrad and grad school and he's still there loving it.

Do you like going to Aggie football games?

Repeat - Are you a traditional Texan?

Do you like Texas Country music?

Would cloudy/rainy weather from from October to May (that's conservative) bother you?

If so... the Pacific Northwest is not for you.

I live in Bend, Or. I love Portland. I is laid back and full of great food and beer. Plenty of outdoor activities. Seattle is close for even more activities. I love the quality of live in the Northwest and it was great for my kids.

I was wondering if you were still in Bend. We're still out here in the desert a couple hours east of you. We get over to Bend every month or so.

Born in raised in Texas, moved to Portland about 5 years ago (I'm probably the guy ORAg references above). Great city and great area if you love the outdoors. Food and booze are very hard to beat.

The two things that turn many Texans off are the weather and the politics. I can understand how some people hate the weather but the rain doesn't bother me too much, and July-September are so nice that it makes it worth it to me. Politics? Portland proper is of course very left-leaning, but outside of the cities Oregon is much more red than perceived from the outside. I'm conservative and have no reason to let the politics here bring me down - I have a good job with satisfying work and no regrets making the move.

Marcel,

We have a group of about 10 Aggies in Bend that get together for about half of the games. Message me your email and I will add you to emails

I've lived in Portland for 8 years now and love it! The toughest time for me is April to June-ish when it feels like summer is never going to get here. But once summer arrives I'm extremely grateful for 80-90 degree weather with low humidity.

As far as areas to avoid -- be picky when you're looking at north Portland -- there are some good areas, but you just gotta do your research. And, don't go too far east. Personally, I wouldn't go beyond 70th or so. I've lived in NW, SE, and now SW and have been happy in all of the neighborhoods for a variety of reasons. "Single me" loved NW -- "married me" (and about to start a family) loves SW. It just depends on what you're looking for. I'd be happy to answer any more specific questions if you'd like!

Meh...Been back in Dallas for 3 months and I'm glad I moved back after 8 years in Oregon. The rain and clouds for 9 months is just miserable. I wasn't too keen on the political landscape there but I made lots of good friends no matter their political views. Life is too short.

I'm glad to be back home but man I miss driving along the McKenzie and Rogue rivers. Lake of the Woods outside of Medford was always fun to hangout on and Fall Creek Reservoir outside of Springfield will always be my favorite lake due to the time we spent on it. 10 Barrel Brewery and Deschutes are sorely missed as well.

HA -- you caught me! I always wondered which of the many "oregon aggie" posters you were -- I couldn't remember after your ring dunk post. Oregon misses you!
