How did you move?

Who did you use?

Would you recommend that company?

What tips might you have for someone moving across the country?

Tips:

1. Don't go cheap on something like that. Save a headache for $500 extra dollars.

2. Check out the BBB and other non-biased sources. There are a lot of scammers out there.

3. Insist on getting a firm arrival date, not some vague 3 week range.

4. Insist that they don't subcontract out to a 3rd party.

5. Consider getting insurance. If you use a reputable company it might not be necessary.

While I agree with bus driver.

We went with hired man power and a rented budget 26' truck. Labor was around $300, truck rental was $800 and gas for truck was another several hundred. This was 3 bedroom house 1000 mile move.

In the end we had plenty scuffs and scratches on wood furniture. I attempted to see what they could do for us for damage, and he was basically a fly by night guy, informing me that I'm the dumbass who hired a guy on craigslist to move his stuff, and that he's hasn't even been in the moving business for ten years.
Gee, thanks for the heads up buddy.
A pod was about $3-4 grand, and a full blown moving company is in the 5 figure range.

Def get insurance if you value your stuff. A lot of our stuff will now live in the basement, and new stuff has been purchased.

We used ABF U-Pack . You pay for the amount of space you use. they drop off the trailer. You pack the trailer in a given time (weekends aren't included). They then bring the semi back and haul it off. You pay a little more to have an exact delivery date, but it wasn't a horrible expense.

As far as furniture packing...you MUST make sure your furniture is securely covered with moving pads/blankets otherwise it will definitely get scratched. Our 800 mile move had no scratched furniture.

Good luck with your move!

Our national mover's quote was 5m while pods and upack were 2m without packing supplies. I think we'll do that, pack at our leisure, use plenty of tiedowns and a whole hell of a lot of furniture padding.

I'd rather have them ship it since the fiancée and I want to make a slow drive back to Dallas stopping off in a lot of towns for festivals ect.

Thoughts? Definitely pay extra to have a specific delivery date?

IIRC the delivery window for unpack wasn't more than a few days.

We paid the extra money because we were on a (sort of) tight schedule. Our closing date on the house was 5 days before I started my new job. We wanted as much time to unpack as possible. If I didn't start my new job so soon, we probably wouldn't have paid extra.

Uhaul uboxes and a local company to fill them up. Everything went nice and smooth and saved 3k vs using a full service mover.
