Anyone know any good school districts/private schools in Wichita? There is a chance the family may move there and wanted to get a heads up.

For public, Maize (west side) or Andover (east side).

The private schools are all very good. My wife graduated from Independent. I believe Collegiate is the best, but prepare your rear for the costs.

If you have more questions you can PM. My wife is from there and we visit quite a bit.

concur with Pahdz.

You might consider Derby as well (south of Wichita) but the extreme east (Andover) and west (Maize) usually get high marks. I don't have kids, so no direct experience. There are some good Catholic schools as well as regular private schools at higher cost as well.

Having said that, I think you can still get a good experience in Wichita if you get the right schools and are involved.

I've been here almost 17 years (hard to believe!) and think Wichita is a great place to live. It is the perfect size town, IMO, with plenty to do but not a crowded PITA to drive through any time of day.

Thanks for the info, I just got the unofficial offer today.

We have a year old so we got sometime, but it's never to early to look at schools...

Congrats! Do you get to come for a scouting visit if you accept the offer, or have you already been up here?

Not sure where you live now, but you'll likely find you can buy a lot of house for the money here, even in the suburban school districts. We've got a smallish but active A&M club here too, so that always helps.

Lived in Wichita from 1986-2012.

Schools
Wichita Public schools are not good. If you want public go either to Maize in the west or Andover in the east. Andover elected to keep their schools smaller.
The Catholic schools are excellent and there are two excellent private schools both on the east side; Collegiate which is expensive and The Independent School, where both of my sons went.

Big issue is which side of town to live. The west is primarily residential and tends to cost less. The east is both residential and recreational with Wichita State univ on the east along with better shopping and restaurants.

Great town to raise a young family but tends to lack some things that it should due to proximity to KC and Ok City.

My wife is a product of Wichita school system (and WSU). She went to northwest, lived somewhere NW off of Maize. She said at the time (mid/late 90s), she would not have wanted to go to any other high school. They tried to bus her to one of the east ones, but her mom somehow got around it.

Probably doesn't matter now, but I lived in Derby for 6 years when I was young. School was small but good. As I remember, I was basically ahead a year when I moved away to another good district. My parents most likely chose the area because of the schools (and it's proximity to McConnell).
