I'm probably moving to Fort Collins in August of this year. Anybody on here have opinions on the area? Likes/Dislikes? Married with a 5 year old. Not set in stone and have other options.

Thoughts on building a home there and costs associated with that?

Random advice?

My Father-in-law just moved there last September. He seems to like it a lot.

Great town! Had an uncle that lived there for years, and I visited many times. Cool college town with a great downtown area.

Cool areas close by. Great neighborhoods in the foothills. Only real downside is its a little far from skiing.

I've lived in Windsor for the past two years. We love it here! Northern Colorado is a great place to have a family! It's also the craft beer capital of the world! Lots of great microbreweries and restaurants in the area. Housing prices are high and there is limited inventory.

Just out of curiosity, how are the mosquitoes?

They can get pretty bad. West Nile is a concern. Most towns/cities spray at night.

Bad as in bad for CO, or as bad as TX? Because I've lived in Denver for 5.5 years & never noticed mosquitoes. One of the numerous benefits of living here.

This. I had plenty of mosquitos in College Station. Where I live in eastern Washington I have seen about 5 mosquitoes in 3 years.

So how bad are we talking?

Not sure about Denver, but in Ft Collins if you go out in summer without bug spray, you will get bit. I find it very similar to central Texas. The good news is there is not a gnat problem.

That's really weird. I've never had problems with any bugs. Complete opposite of Texas.

Crap. Thanks. I haven't missed mosquitoes at all. Actually summers up here are completely bug free.

It may seem trivial to some, but the lack of mosquitoes in Denver is a huge draw for us. Today was a perfect example in Houston. Beautiful day so we take the kids outside and get swarmed. I lay down two cans of a fogger and finally give up.

Beautiful day and trapped indoors.

Yeh I don't think I've seen a misquote since I moved to Denver area 2 years ago. Didn't realize NoCo had them. Weird, cause I worked in greeley weekly for many months, never noticed them there either.

Mosquitoes can be brutal, but can be managed, too. You'll want to invest in some anti-biter measures for your backyard BBQ during the summer.

Horsetooth Reservoir is great for rowing, stand-up boarding, and boating. Just don't be that guy who screams his boat by a a group on boards or kayaks. Sadly, there are plenty of them.

It is a small town, so be prepared for that. It has a lot of similarities to College Station (even CSU was Colorado A&M back in the day. I wear my Colorado A&M Aggies shirt to gamee).

Housing inventory is in short supply and you don't get as much for you money as you do in Texas. The Group is one of the bigger real estate agencies out here and they can help.

The job market is pretty tight up here as well. I wouldn't recommend coming here without something already lined up.

Tons of good hiking, mountain biking, road biking, running, and fishing spots. The Poudre River Valley is amazing. The closest skiing is either Eldora or Snowy Range (WY) - both at about 1:45 away. Definitely means that you want to plan your trips to anything off of I-70. I would recommend going up Thursday and coming back Saturday night if you can. Avoid holiday weekends.

At last count I think there were 15 breweries in a 20 mile radius. Lots of good beer. There are dispensaries too, if weed is your thing. In that regard, you will notice those working in the service industry tend to take a lot longer to do their jobs. Just remember it is a college town were pot is legal.

Hope to see you at some Aggie game watching events next fall. Cheers.

Thanks. It isn't set in stone yet. My wife has a job at CSU if she wants it. They will throw me into the partner program to help out finding a job for me.

The mosquitos are a bit of a bummer. I've gotten used to no problems with those little blighters.

The size of the town is decent for us. I also like the access to Denver if we want a bigger city. We actually prefer smaller towns if possible. Fort Collins will be bigger than our current town. I like hiking, so Fort Collins is appealing in that regard.

I am actually trying to move to that area from Dallas. My degree was in Agricultural Economics. However my career experience over the last 5 years has been in Healthcare and Fire/EMS, due largely to just wanting to serve the community (body depreciates, mind appreciates). Now I am currently looking for more a business culture in either sales, purchasing or analyst. If anybody knows of anything between Denver and Fort Collins it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks and Gig em!

I'll be in FoCo tomorrow evening. Actually, I'm there about every other week. It's only an hour from Laramie. So, we run errands to hit up Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Target, Sephora, PetSmart, etc.

Mosquito problems seem to vary by year. Our first summer in Laramie, we never noticed them. Last summer, I got eaten alive. The traffic on College can be a bear, especially when you get used to no traffic.

I proudly boycott NB because they've taken a stance against my industry. If their beer was better, I might reconsider my position.

Meh.. It's hypocritical of them to dog on dangers of franc fluid... I mean, they make alcohol. As if it doesn't have dangers that go along with it.

I don't let the opinions of musicians, actors, and by extension, makers of beer, get in my way of enjoying their product.

If mosquitos are the deciding factor I'll take Colorado. Even if they're bad in season, you'll have a long off season. My memories of Houston mosquitos is that they generally didn't care if it was January or July...

They aren't really a deciding factor. I just was hoping they weren't around much, if at all. I've gotten spoiled with none around.

I was in Fort Collins two weeks ago, there weren't any around in town, so that was nice. They are already out in TX

Better Beer than Fat Tire, Ranger IPA, etc., are you high?
And if you think that New Belgium's stand against frac'ing is going to put you out of work, you're obviously not good at math. Or maybe you didn't see the Matt Damon movie Nobody gives 2 S's about fracking. You're going to be out of work because of my Saudi friends, not because of New Belgium. So... drink up. Literally, Fat Tire is one of the best things to ever come out of Colorado.

Sorry about the not good at Math jab but, I'm in Vegas and was drunk on Fat Tire when I typed that
Plus, a college acquaintance just hit me up with the boycott New Belgium thing a couple weeks ago because as he claimed... They're trying to put me out of work so I won't drink their beer. I was hoping that logic hadn't spread too far. I hope for your sake and for some of my family members that the days of $100/bbl return in the near future because $50/bbl is going to put a lot of folks in a bind - fracking or not.

You need to drink better beer. Fat Tire is not bad, but it's definitely not good enough where I don't mind boycotting.... same for most of their beer. If it was great beer.... then I'd probably drink it. There's probably 25+ Colorado breweries that I prefer over NB. I hear their tap room/tour is nice though.

Your comments about fracing are pretty ignorant, but I know you live out of the country. There was quite a bit of concern in 2013-2014 about some state legislators pushing for frac bans and/or radical limitations on fracing. I know several of the larger Wattenberg producers were really worried. If the local anti-frac movement makes it uneconomical to continue to develop the Wattenberg, then it increases the chances that I'll have to move. I'd change careers before I leave Colorado, and I really don't want to practice law.

La Follie, Le Terrior, snapshot, and a few of their other LoF stuff are the only NB offerings really worth buying.

Fort Collins native here but I live in Windsor now. Just saw your postings so I don't know if you still look at this thread or not. What kind of work do you need? Let me know if you have any questions about the area. You will really like it here!

Hi. You can email me at username (with an underscore between letters and numbers) at yahoo dot com.

We just closed on our house yesterday in FC and move down there for good next week. I have a MS in Econ and have been working in consulting for the last decade. I'd be happy to discuss further or just make contact with other local Aggies.
