Anyone live there? Have lived there? Company has an office there so relocating is a possibility. Tired of south Texas and want to move closer to the Rockies/Wasatch for skiing, trout fishing, etc. looking for better weather and a more outdoors life.

I have never lived there but have visited many times. I have friends that have lived and/or gone to school there. Nice city. Craploads of outdoor stuff to do. IMO some of the best skiing in the U.S. Some of the best powder as well.

Politically very conservative with a very heavy influence from the Mormon church, although SLC itself is no longer majority Mormon, Utah certainly is. Mormons are great people and wonderful neighbors. Some of them can be clannish, some not. They finally more or less fixed their brain dead alcohol sales rules.

And I can guaran-frickin-tee that it has much better weather than south Texas.

Agree with all of what you've said. I've skied in Utah each of the past 5 years and loved it. The issue is, I've only vacationed there.

SLC is a very cool town. It isn't majority Mormon. That has to be better than living in the RGV.

I'm in Utah. I love it. Would never head back to TX.

Amazing outdoor stuff, tons of public land, up and coming food scene (although no good texmex).

Do it. If you have specific questions feel free to contact me

I live in Denver but I always thought SLC was a much more beautiful city, being actually IN the mountains.

If you're tired of the South Texas heat/humidity and want more outdoor options, I imagine you'll love Utah.

Salt Lake City is great. One of our main offices is in Woods Cross so we pop in up there from time to time. There is a ton of outdoor stuff to do out there year round. The hiking and biking is great in the summer.

The skiing is phenomenal out there. The only issue i have is being in the city itself during winter. The inversion is horrible. There was at least one time where there was enough smog held in the city that it was difficult to read even the large highway signs until you were very close. Best thing to do during these times is head to the mountains. Once you get above the inversion the skies are crystal clear.

I live in WY but I'm only 2 hours or so from SLC. We do a lot of our shopping and take frequent weekend trips there. One thing I've always noticed is the city is very clean and there really doesn't seem to be a bad part of town to live in. The outdoor options are endless, the shopping is great (numerous malls and outlets), and there are some fantastic restaurants. Home prices will be a little higher than you're used to, but honestly it's not too bad when you compare it with the likes of Denver. I wouldn't hesitate to move there if given the opportunity.

As someone who is interested in moving to Denver or CO Springs, I'd be curious how SLC compares...never been to SLC

I could go on and on about SLC. My husband and I moved here in June. We've lived in Dallas, Houston, College Station & Temple, TX. We are both Aggies & have always loved Texas. Before we moved here we said we would absolutely move back to Texas...after 9 months of living here, I'm not so sure that will happen...we love it!

We live in South Salt Lake (so we are 5-10 minutes to downtown, 15 to the UofU hospital, 30 to Park City, 40 to our usual fly fishing spot on the Provo River and 10-15 minutes to the edge of the Wasatch mountains.

We love being able to drive 15 minutes from our house to go hiking and feel like we are lost in the wilderness. It's something we could never do in Texas. My husband is big into fly fishing, so anytime we get some free time, we toss the poles in the truck and head to the Provo River - it's unbelievable compared to the places we fished in Texas haha

Pros:

  • Having the mountains as our backyard - The city is literally built into the foothills of the mountains - you can't get much closer than that.
  • Proximity to cool vacations destinations (8 hours drive or less to Grand Canyon, Lake Tahoe, Bear Lake, Arches National Park, Grand Teton NP, Bryce Canyon, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Durango, Denver, Idaho, Montana)
  • Insanely Clean Downtown & everything you could ever need shopping-wise
  • Great Food/Bar Scene (feels somewhat like Austin), Farmer's Markets, Film Festival, etc.
  • Incredible weather, actual "seasons" & low humidity!
  • Endless Outdoor Activities - Camping, Hiking, Snowshoeing, Skiing, Fly Fishing, etc.
  • Cost of Living (it is much better than I expected. I thought it would be similar to the West Coast or Colorado, but we have found that is definitely not true.)
  • The population is very "outdoorsy". We love going on a hike and seeing people outside on a weekend instead of spending time indoors or at the mall or watching TV. (Mom is carrying a kid, the Dad has a baby strapped to his back, another kid running up ahead and 2 dogs trailing behind). No electronics, no "paid-for" fun, just a family spending time outside.
  • Views of the mountains - because SLC is built in a bowl of mountains, we can see mountains in every direction.
Cons:

  • Having to buy wine, liquor & beer over 4% at State Liquor Stores
  • Winter Inversion (mainly January) - the bad part about SLC being in a bowl of mountains...although this winter hasn't been too bad - only a few smoggy days
  • No Tex- Mex...but I guess that's why it is called "Tex"-Mex
  • Learning to bake at high altitude

We've met a lot of transplants from Texas that have told us they always planned to move back to Texas, but changed their mind after living in SLC for a while. Overall, we love it...and don't think we will be moving back to Texas any time soon.

Have lived in Logan Utah for 4 years. Quirky culture but GREAT outdoors activities. All of our friends here are from other parts of US, all thought they would be here temporarily, and all of us plan to stay. If you like hiking, biking, hunting, fishing, skiing, camping, you need to do this. You can always move back.

I was there for a conference in September, and I really wasn't that impressed with it. I'm used to seeing green everywhere, and the area just seemed brown. I stayed in the downtown area, and it was kind of small. They had some good restaurants, but nothing that I couldn't get anywhere else. A lot were chains.

A few people ventured out and did some hikes and whatnot, but I can do all of that stuff here in Oregon. I can see how it might be a nice change from Texas, but it didn't compare to Oregon, in my opinion.

The conference I went to is in SLC every 18 months or so, so maybe I'll find something more interesting the next time.

Like Legget79, we live in Logan too. We have been here for 8 years but have gotten used to the quirkiness, etc. We had the chance to move to SLC recently but decided that Logan was the most appropriate place for us. It's a very easy life here and cost of living is really cheap.

I don't think we can ever move back to Texas. It's just too nice here with the mountains and outdoor fun being so close and so cheap. Our kids love it as it is very kid-friendly here (as you would expect).

Been here 9 years. Ive lived in several areas accross the valley, but currently in riverton. echo what the others have said. Great place to live and raise a family. Countless opportunities for outdoor activities and opportunities for quick weekend getaways. Strong economy, clean city, safe, family friendly. Its tough to beat.

As an ultra runner this makes me jealous of SLC folks with this in their backyard. This group did this on a weeknight after work

Can't really help you there, except to say stay out of West Valley. That seems to make the news a lot, and not in a good way. Had some friends in Sandy, and it seemed nice

I live in WY as well and visit SLC quite a bit. I love the city and would actually like to live there myself. Friendly and clean city with great sking near by, not to mention an abundance of out door activity.

Had a daughter graduated from the U a couple of years ago. She stayed for work, but is moving soon and I'm sad. SLC is a fantastic town with plenty to do in and out of town. She has lived in the area called the Aves for 4 years. The Aves are just north of downtown. A great area - and SLC has several. It is one of the few cities I'd live in. Good luck.

Where would work be?

Draper is great. We lived there up until a few years ago. Would like to make it back.

South Jordan is another great area.

Where will the office be located?
I have a work associate who has raised her family in Park City. The commute is no longer than a "short" commute in Houston or the Metroplex, her real estate has appreciated considerably and she lives in a resort town. When we've flown out for skiing, I've been beyond jealous.

Just landed a job assignment there so I am pumped. Currently live in Denver and of course love Colorado but been here over 6 years... excited for a change. I'm a bit nervous about the conservative nature but I hear that in the city proper it's pretty cool and laid back. It's gorgeous and close to the mountains... big plus for me.

Love SLC! Moved here from B-CS back in the 1980s to attend grad school at the U, met my wife here, got involved in a career here. Stay away from the west side (gangs, drugs), avoid Pioneer Park area and West Valley City. It has the best restaurant selection (my fave is a Lebanese restaurant called Mazza-French influenced Middle Eastern cuisine) and Red Iguana creates interior Mexican cuisine authentically. For Tex-Mex, a reasonable facsimile is Tres Hombres but let's face it---it ain't home. All that being said, after my wife's retirement in a few years we are looking at the north Georgia mountains or Texas Hill Country to be closer to grandkids and for better tax situation. I love Utah, but it is not tax friendly for retirees due to a very young population in school. SLC is unfortunately hostage to an anti-police/pro-LGBTQIWTF mentality with very liberal city administration and it shows in the crime rate. For suburbs, Midvale and Sandy are not bad. Although the downtown looks small compared to Houston or Dallas, remember the geography: it is a metro area of almost two million plus people spread along a valley system some eighty miles long stretching from Ogden to Provo. You can find pretty much anything you want here. It is gun-friendly and thankfully, the Leg keeps liberal Dems in check.

Drove through SLC a few weeks ago. While there isn't true tex mex per se, there is still some good Mexican. We ate at Red Iguana which was actually pretty tasty.

Then again, we have been in Highlands Ranch for six months and are desperate for better food. Haha

Slc and Utah in general is really dang beautiful. Can't wait to go back.
