How long do you want to ignore this user?
I work half-days from home a day or two per week. On top of that, I go through some slow periods at work that leave me with some time to spare.

Does anyone have any good "side hustles" where I can make money in my free time from home at my computer or on my phone? Something that isn't necessarily on a deadline and a couple of hours per day.

I'm not really looking for the "watch ads and get paid pennies" type deal…. but I also don't want a full second job as I don't want to get in trouble with my employer.

It seems like many younger people spend effort on a side hustle that would better be spent trying to increase performance at work or better themselves through education.

Edit to add: I'm not saying this is specifically the case for OP, just a general observation.

This idea does not work well in current times. Example:

Year 2022 - work 45 hours per week. Get no raise.

Year 2023 - work 60 hours per week. Get no raise. Two of your Five Teammates RIFd.

Year 2024 - work 69 hours per week. Get 3% raise. Two new employees hired at a 1.1x rate compared to you.

Year 2025 - work 70 hours per week. Get 2.1% raise. Mentor two new employees.

Year 2026 - work 80 hours per week. No raise and the two newest employees quit b/c of no raises.

Year 2027 - work 80 hours per week. Get divorced b/c your phone wont stop ringing. Get 1.69% raise.

Year 2028 - Get laid off b/c you cost too much and a trans-man was hired to replace you at 1.8x your previous pay.

I always used the "Salaries buy lunches. Commissions buy dinners and weekends." idea.

I started with this, but my job is just kind of seasonal because of what I do. There are parts of the year when there aren't 8 hours of work to do. I'm considered a high performer, and when promotion opportunities arise I'll be one of the first in line - but that may be 2 months or 2 years from now.

I don't mind doing extra work - I do it all the time. But the general premise of your post seems to be spot on with the corporate culture I've seen across a couple different companies. It seems like it is very difficult to keep up with inflation at the same company unless you take a couple steps up the ladder (and even then, you're probably not making as much as the external hires to your same position)

I'm just looking to use my extra time efficiently instead of watching TV.

Then maybe the education route would be good. Keep in mind that doesn't only include typical higher education formats. It could be a real estate license or license to be a exterminator. It could be self help, such as how to start a business or investing in real estate. Lots of options besides watching TV.

Staying at the desk? You might look at Upwork. Tons of gigs people are looking for on there. You can also work as a virtual personal assistant. Sometimes this involves handling a social media account for somebody or doing other things online for them.

You can try the creator route. This takes a lot of time and it should involve something you enjoy. YouTube pays well when you're established. Amazon likewise. Speaking of Amazon some people do the third party seller thing. Basically it involves finding a lucrative niche. I heard for a while people were making money reselling Costco trash bags for a profit.

You can do resell on eBay but I hear their fees on sellers are exorbitant. Also the customer is always right so they don't back sellers in disputes. Again just what I hear. I know a couple people who just use Poshmark for basic resell and do quite well. That's not straight desk work though.

You can pick up an online tutoring gig. You can proof edit books for typos. You can read books for audio (another Amazon gig check out ACX).

I'm sure there's more, that's off the top of my head.

Now that I'm more experienced I realize I may see a lot bigger payoff focusing on being really talented in a career and getting a high salary than managing a career and a side business. For one, I don't have time for a side business the last year and half my hours have been insane. But now I've finally reached the first doubling of my base salary compared to my starting salary out of school (which was pretty high at the time). I'm making more than I imagined I would at this point, but it requires relocating to a new city that is the hub for my industry.

Focusing on interview skills and technical problems to get through difficult interviews, as well as spending some time learning negotiation skills and tactics, has had tremendous returns for me.

Focus on mastering skills that command high income may be a better option for many than a "side hustle" unless the side hustle can grow into a full time business and you have real passion for it.

There is also a lot of random chance involved with respect to opportunities. All I can say is to be prepared for them. Master in demand skills that people will pay you for.

I know I've done a lot more self teaching and independent study than most and it has paid off. Taught myself to code working python programming books really set me apart, and I bought and studied additional engineering text books 8 years after graduation and even worked practice problems. This deliberate skill development got me where I am today and set me apart from most peers.

2 years working 80 hours per week for standard salary? Doubtful. I don't think anyone would do that for 2 years without jumping ship unless they have really good pay or some equity in the business.

I've been doing a solid 60 hours the past few months and am now doing 80 for the past 3 weeks. I have to be at the job site 11-13 hours a day 6 days a week for a 4-6 weeks push.

without seriously good pay, commissions, or some stake in the company it's hard to imagine anyone putting up with that much time commitment for more than a few weeks, let alone years. Pretty sure everyone around me would quit by the end of month 3 if these 80 hour weeks weren't temporary.

I agree. But that wasn't my point. I just don't believe that that many people are putting in 80 hour weeks for 2 plus years. For several reasons, as you mentioned priorities. But also because the vast majority of people are too lazy to work that hard. (Not saying you should work that hard, but I know a lot do damn people who are too lazy to work 40 hour weeks)

Probably came out wrong and didn't convey my meaning. In both tries lol. I'm not trying to put a negative connotation on not working 80 hour weeks by any means

What I do:

1) day trade
2) consult for firms like GLG and Alphasights. I charge $500/hr and I get paid to talk about stuff I know
3) fractional CXO (I will have to stop this soon though).

For most people I think working on presentations or technical writing can be rewarding and can pay OK.

Once upon a time I took a second contract job in addition to full time work. That was stupid and was very stressful, but I had a goal to raise a certain amount of money and I did that. I know a guy who's got his day job down to 4 hours a week and took two contract positions, one east coast and one west coast during the main Covid surge.
