Been thinking about doing this for a while as a side gig. I've got 12 years in recruiting, staffing, and HR management. Needless to say, I have spent quite a bit of time reviewing resumes and helping candidates put their best foot forward on paper. I have also helped out family and friends who either need a new resume written or just need to update one they haven't had to touch in years.

Not everybody needs a whole new resume, so I'm thinking of a couple of options to those who would use the service:

  • Basic Option: A general review of what they've got, to include proofreading, suggestions on content and how to make things more appealing to hiring manager.
  • Full-service Option: Includes a full re-do or writing from scratch. Would include getting basic info like places of work, years, titles, etc but I would do research on the companies, roles, etc and would write a resume to be reviewed and finalized with the candidate.

Thoughts? Don't hold back...

TIA

DM me, happy to be your first client. 10+ years in corporate America with government regulator and prior military
service. I get hit up on LinkedIn a lot and have not taken the time to have something to hand back when asked.

Just a general thought … a slowing economy (stagflation)means a lot of folks looking for work so there should be lots of client opportunities.

When folks look to a service, they're likely wanting to hit the easy button. I'd offer options like you do but price the service to "nudge" folks to the level that gives you the best bang for your buck (your compensation vs your time).

Hi jagvocate and agAngeldad

Doesn't look like I have the ability to DM. Please shoot me an email at clbresumeservices@gmail and we can get things going.

Thanks!

I actually have similar experience as you, 12 years in talent acquisition/HR. I did a resume side gig business early on in my career. It sucked lol. Some clients were genuinely great: they took my advice, loved the resume I did for them, and paid on time. Others (most of them) were horrible: know it all's, didn't take my advice, never paid, I kept having to chase them for payment etc. It took a few experiences with the horrible clients to realize the juice wasn't worth the squeeze. Also, it will be hard to pick up new clients since there is a ton of competition in this space.

Best of luck.

You need an infographic resume service option that uses neat visualizations to break through the stack and also gives an opportunity for the person to show their story/personality. Win win in that it generates higher revenue for you and more odds of a job for them. Tons of examples on google to get inspiration from, but not many people have heard of them.

I've been recruiting for 12+ years, have reviewed thousands of resumes, and have no idea what you are talking about here lol. The best advice is to just use a standard resume template. Don't overthink it.

I've never heard of these, and just googled "infographic resume". Very cool I think if done right. Why look like you're out of the 80's or 90's when technology has changed. I won't need a resume anytime soon but if I ever did this is a great way to go.

Just like the other reply, I had to google what that even was. My guess is that there are very specific jobs and industries where those are used, maybe something like graphic design. Outside of that, its overkill and honestly would hurt your chances as a candidate, as most applicant tracking systems wouldn't know how to handle the images and formatting.

I see the point you're making, but I think that's a narrow minded view of it. A creative, clear, and compelling infographic resume can have the content conventional real and bot readers want, but also show an edge for visualization that is more efficient and informative than the conventional methods. Just because you've only seen a typewriter doesn't mean an iPad isn't awesome. Even just having one or two elements from an infographic inspiration can create an edge among the resume stack.

Tried and true may work - but if people are shooting for their dream and trying to maximize their attractiveness to a hiring company before they can say a word with their mouth - a well done infographic resume can be more than worth the effort to make…especially if a service existed where you sent your normal resume in, filled out a questionnaire, then BAM out pops a gorgeous version of your resume that literally tells your story in a more compelling way than you've ever seen.

That's the advice I'm trying to give the OP. The satisfaction and willingness to pay for great infographic resumes should undoubtedly be higher than conventional resume writing services.

This feels like it would be a fun side gig, but also if you haven't figured out how to train chatgpt on this specific task might not be worth it

I'm pretty old school but I too thought these were cool.

So many resumes are filled with meaningless pablum ... "good communication skills, team player, blah blah blah."

Honest opinion? You might be able to limp along for a couple years but AI is going to murder this industry. It already has the capability to churn out a good resume and in 2 years it'll be able to build great ones. This is an area in which AI will excel.

For the heck of it, I asked ChatGPT "I have this job description on my resume. How should I improve it?" and then dumped in the entire block. It gave me a nice critique and then suggested an improved version. And while I'm not an expert, I've taken numerous resume writing classes, so I'm not a clueless clown either.

Dying job

Thanks for the reply

Agree, which is why I am not quitting my day job to do this. Purely a side gig to earn some extra cash. If its a 6 month grab or a 2 year one, we'll see.

Wish you luck. May you make as much cash as you can.

If I were you I'd take AI head on. Play around with ChatGPT a little, and then on your website, list the suggestions that ChatGPT gives and pick them apart one by one. Show why you're the better value. If you don't, then 75% of your target client group will run to AI without a second thought.
