I am looking for alternatives now that Intuit is sunsetting Quickbooks Desktop and forcing everyone into a subscription plan.

I've heard and read up on Wave and Zoho and am leaning toward Wave, but wanted to see if anyone has used both or has warnings about either. Other options would also be welcome, of course.

Company profile
Sole Proprietor business owner
Engineering consultant
No employees
1099 sub contracts are possible, but rare
Less than 500 invoices per year
CPA would need file for tax work

Thanks for any input y'all have.

What type of engineering consultant services do you do? Could be a helpful contact for us in the development business.

Is there a reason - other than cost - you aren't considering QB online? It's the industry leader.

Lots of accountants do the QB thing. Might come in handy if you need one sometime.

If your CPA is a small office there's a good chance they can access your company in QBO which is a level of convenience other options almost certainly don't offer. It really is the best solution out there for a business like yours.

Cool. Always looking to make another contact in the industry. I'm in ground-up real estate development. What location do you mainly operate in?

The fact that FTX, a multibillion-dollar company at the time, was using (or attempting to use) Quickbooks to manage their records should speak volumes towards the software.

Central Texas area, but have done projects all over the State. Not too familiar with Houston or DFW areas, though.

And I hear all of you saying "just do QB"

But when they increase prices for comparable online program to 300% of what it cost me for desktop, I have to weigh options....

And I do appreciate the input. Thank you.

I've always thought QB is the tool that you want to use if you hate dual entry accounting. I think FTX would agree.

The price for Desktop has soared as well. Last time I looked it was like $800/yr now because it looks like it includes payroll which used to be an add on. I've been waiting for them to kill Desktop for years and it looks like that time is finally here. Desktop at $200 for three years but $800 for one is awful. Pretty obvious they're pushing the small users from Desktop Pro and Premium to Online.
