How long do you want to ignore this user?
6 weeks after I filed my return, I got an IRS Form 5071C. I had to go online to verify my identity. Now it is going to be 9 weeks until I get my refund. I am not worried about the money, but more curious about what would cause me to get the form.

They don't give you any data on what prompts their system to require the form. It could be someone attempted to file a return with my name. It could be random. It could be something in my return that caused the flag though we didn't move, didn't get a divorce, or didn't have any other issues from their list.

They just claim that there is something that caused them to believe that the return you filed may not be yours. Anyone have any insight?

Most likely someone else has your social and filed.

Probably an illegal, like happened to my father.

We had someone file a return in our name, but we knew immediately because our accountants attempted to file our return electronically and it said a return had already been filed in our name. We had to file by mail at that point and go through the process of confirming our identity. This was for 2021 taxes. It's still being resolved as they still think we owe money, even though we do estimated taxes, overpaid and we're getting a refund for that year. We've had no official communication from them since we filed by mail and sent the form in about the identity theft. The only reason we know this about the money is that it shows up in our online portal with the IRS. We filed our a form to see the fraudulent filing, so we could see what they used and what info they had, but we've received nothing.

It doesn't seem to have bounced because of another filing. At least that we are aware of at this point. We were able to file electronically.

Maybe someone tried to file a fraudulent return under your name or social after you had filed?

Who knows? Their whole system is messed up! Our accountant told us that 30% of his clients that had an identity theft issue.

Is there any way to figure that out? To use the online system, you have to know the amount of their requested refund.

Several years ago I had a huge return coming. I had to physically appear to prove who I was. Don't know if this form was around then. Delayed my refund a little.

I feel for people working there.

Since we pay quarterly, I log into our account and go to the payment area. When I say I want to pay, it lists years to pay. My fraudulent year still shows a balance and all others years show balance of zero.

No where in my account is anything flagged or shows there was fraudulent activity. I just knew from the initial attempt at filing. I called and they said they were not through all the fraudulent issues and that would show up until it's resolved.
