Can't remember the last time I got a check from the IRS, but have one in hand. It's showing a payment amount of $*******30*79. Nothing spelled out in words. I'm assuming this is for $30.79?

Why can't they just use a decimal point instead of asterisk?

Yeah, it is for $30.79. I would guess the use of the asterisk instead of a decimal point has some origin in preventing changing of the amount, though not sure what.
